He came off the starting line like a house-a-fire and took heat from second place Petro for the entire race. Ken Faught (Yam) passed Dennis Chafe (Yam) on the crashwall dou bles to take third . By th e second lap Bak er had lost his mornen- tum a nd fad ed to fourth, letting Surratt, Turner and Peterson all get past. 'There was a bo ut a bikelength between a ll three riders for th e rest of the rnoto. On the fifth lap Peterson almost ca ugh t his long-time rival , Turner, but Turner prevailed to the end and crossed the finish line just behind Surratt and barely ahead of Peterson. They were followed by M-Star rider Pete Murray and Yamaha rider John Posca. Surratt got the holeshot in the second rno to wi th Turner and Peterson breathing right down his neck. He then pursued Surratt for another la p a nd taugh t the you ng rookie a lesson in resp ect fo r age and experience w hen he handi ly slipped by on the left-hand sweeper by the finish line. O n ce he was in the lead Pe terson was not challenged and easily won the second moto. Surratt was second, Turner third and Murray was fourth. The overall went to Surratt with 1-2, second to Pe terson with 3-1 and Turner was third with 2-3. The 500cc Beginner race was a ruuaway with Mike Embry (Hon) of Thousand Oaks winning both motos with ease. In the first moto Embry left the gate with a lead and he didn't relinquish an inch in all five laps. Todd Barsby (Hon) ran in second and Michael Pinkstaff (Hon) passed Ron Bu ccieri , when he went down in a slick right hander, to finish third. Jimmy Ba rt o li (Hon) led Embry for the first la p and a half of round two. After Embry got by, he and Bar toli ran way ahead of the rest of the riders. Ba rt o li went down briefly on th e white flag la p , but because he was so far in front of third runner Barsby he didn 't lose his position. Embry cru ised across th e line with a big lead and took the overall win. Barsby was second with a 2-3, and Bartoli was th ird with a 5-2. Honda rider Travis Stake gated first and led a 16 rider field of 250cc Juniors through turn one. Arnet faced to ugh going in round one action as he bo bb led the start an d had to wo rk up from fif th p lace to take over the lead near the halfway point. Suzuki rider Jerry Black reached the checkers n ext ahead of Hondamounted Bill Scou and Yamaha rider Mike Woodbury. Arnet timed th e gate better for m ota two and powered to an ea rly lea d over Black who kept the p ressu re on throughout the mota, but was never able to mount a serious charge and had to settle for the runner-up position again. Arnet took the overall as Black collected the number two share of the purse .ahead of Scott, Black and Honda rider Mike Edson. B.]. Milspaugh earned top bragging rights in l25cc Interm ed ia te ac tion , posting a 2-3 score as others suffered from mechanical problems. Kawasaki rider Ward Ba ssett use d a 6-1 score to earn second overall after firs t moto winner Mi ke McLain (Kaw) DN F round two. Third overall went to Loren Pochirowski o n a H o nda .
