The final looked like it co u ld produce the raceof th e day as Mafaro , on . his Vance & Hines/ LAW-s ponsor ed Suzuki , ; had been in .40s all day excep t for one .30s pass: Mafaro and Van ce usually react very quickl y so ne ither was really going to jump out on th e other and this narrow ed the raetors down to one - lane cho ice. Vance had the left lane as h e had all day and this would prove to be th e key. As th e last yellow light blinked out on th e sta rti ng tre e. both were offlike the y ca me out or a cannon . The reaction ti mes were th e week end's best for both - Van ce at .478 to Mafaro 's .480.
