Wh en the race was resta rte d Ash mea d immedi at el y jumped into the lead, a hea d of Filice and Bettencourt, and this time Tola nd was working hi s way forward , passing Quarterl ey, the n Orlando to move up just behi nd the ba tt le betw een Betten court, Filice and McMurt er. T he lead er s were mu ch m o re close ly packed th an in th e first sta rt, th e pace was fa ster with Ashmead , Fil ice a nd Bett en court getting into the I: II s, McMurt er turning a fastest lap o f 1:12,3 an d Tola n d ni cking into th e 1:12s; and wh ile Ash mea d was n ever pa ssed, seco nd was fa r from co nfirm ed. Bett en court held it , th en Fil ice took it bac k; Betten court too k it again; Fi lice took it back agai n . On th e 15th lap George T auner crashed in turn fou r; the race was red flagged again o n th e 17th lap, just as Filice was p u lling off wi th a broken shi ft lever linkage. The race was declared over after anoth erdelay. wi th the scori ng ba cked u p to th e 16th lap. That had a crucial effect on th e results, preserving Fil ice's seco nd pl ace despit e h is mecha nica l problem. It a lso in fluence d th ird pl ace. As Bett en court put it afterwards, " I sa w a guy with h is head sticking up from the ha yba les in turn four a nd slo wed down a li ttl e a nd Rueben went just as fast as he did th e lap before, and that 's why h e passed me for th ird. Kevin Sch wa ntz borro wed j oh n Will iams' backup Du cati a n d cha rged through th e pack to cla im seco nd overa ll - beatin g Williams in th e pr ocess. Schwantz had decided not to rid e o ne o f Dal e Newton 's TT2 Du catis to co nce ntrate instead on th e Superbike race; Schwantz never even pra cti ced o n th e bike. In th e meantime, Williams' bike broke in practice and he jumped onto the spare th at was originall y set for Schwantz. But wh en Schwantz's Yoshimura Suzuki broke in th e Su pe rbike race, Newton and crew fever ishl y replaced th e en gi ne in th e broken bik e, in case Schw antz would recon sider a nd decide to race.. Schwantz did, and his onl y practice o n th e bike co ns isted of the warm -up lap before th e sta rt. Adamo jumped to a co m man d ing lead a t th e sta rt, with Gen e Church aboard h is H arley Owner 's Groupsponsored " L uci fer's Hammer" in ho t p urs ui t. T wo seco n ds beh ind was a third-place Sch wa ntz , with Will ia ms glued to his back tire. Adamo led th e pa ck unch allen ged, running th e firs t laps a t a record pace, hi s fa stest lap bein g a 1:11.52; wh en h is lead in crea sed to eigh t seco nds , Adamo backed o ff to run I:13s a nd I: 14s. In the mean time, Sch wa ntz got co mpletely sideways in tu rn n in e. a lmost h igh-sided with hi s feet above h is h ead. la nded back in th e sea t a n d ca rried on. La ter in th e ra ce, Sch wa ntz ran into th e same turn underneath a la p ped rider a nd got sq ueezed o ff a t th e apex, al most losin g th e fro nt end and goi ng wide o u t o f the co rner wi th h is foot down. He was , as o ne observer lat er put it , exp loring the a liter limits of th e bike's performance enve lope. O n th e fifth lap Sch wa n tz sq ueezed by C h urch, a nd set o ff in pursuit o f Ada mo. C h urch appeared to be fading, but was a ble to hold on to th ird p lace u nt il th e eigh th lap wh en h e wa s p assed by Will iams. " I th ought I was ru n n ing prett y good," Ch u rch said followin g th e rac e, " I just th ough t the o ther guys were running faster." Ch u rch wa s a ble to hold onto fourth place through th e 16th lap, wh en h is engine th rew a co n nec ti ng rod th rough th e cases. " I' ve been lookin g for th at ," said Don Tilley , who p repares Lucifer 's Ha m mer . " We haven ' t had a mech anical a ll year." With Adamo cr uising, Sch wa n tz chi pped away at th e margin . " Fred Eiker rode the Ren nspo rt Moto-Guzzi , (whi ch is usua lly ridden by Frank Mazur; Mazur was inj ured at Sears Po int ), to victory in th e Heavyweight Modified class, defeating habitual class win ner Dave McClure a nd hi s potent Vic Fasola-tuned Harley-Davidson and Am erica's fi rst lady of motorcycle racing, Sh erry Friduss 0 it and h er Moto-Guzzi. In th e Lightweight Modified final . Eri c Ginn (Due) waged a mighty battle agai ns t Triumph-mounted Paul G alivan. T hou gh Triumphs are seldom a match for Duca ti V-twins. G allivan wa s aboard an extremely stro ng-ru n ni ng m ach in e. rode visibly harder th an any body on the track. an d o n th e ninth lap was able to secure th e lead for the win.
