Rob Pfetz!ng battled w it h a.rad Oxley during the main at t he Orange County Fairgrounds; he won it. and took home the Fair Derby trophy. Pfetzing wins Fair Derby By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA , JULY 12 A 15-year tradition carried on at Coors Weste rn Night at the Orange County Fairgrounds Friday night. The tradition is 20 th at no single rider has ever won th e coveted Fair Derby trophy more than one time and Raben " Five Flavors" Pfe tzing preserved th e traditio n when he defeated ~rad Oxley in an exci ting four-lap rnam event before a massiv e crowd . Curoso h ad a ch ance LO become th e first ri de r in the history of th e event to win it twi ce - he cap tured th e crown back in 1975. He drew th e pole a nd th at en hanced h is chances bu t h e cam e o u t o f th e ga te seco nd to Pfetzing with Dwyer and Oxl ev lurkin g just beh in d . Dwyer rnoed past Curos~ for seco nd but Curoso took it back just as quickl y. Oxley sh ot past Dwver for th ird a nd th en d rov e pa st Curo so a t th e end o f th e second lap for seco nd . That was as far as Oxley wa s go ing LO go ; Pfetzing was riding a perfect race and he crossed under th e c hec ~ered flag with room to spare. Pfetzing was elated with his win and wa s slapping himself in the head in disbel ief a s he tr avelled down th e backchu re on hi s slo wdo wn lap. It took a total of three attempts to get th e Handicap main underway a n d wh en th ey finall y did it was a war between Alan " Crazy" Christian and Jim Lawson. Lawson off th e 30 wa s leading over Christian who was coming from the 40. Christian fir st leaned all over Lawson as he attempted LO press his way past on theinside, When that didn 't work, Christian (ST P / Valvoline/Champion/Bei IlCireIlo Racing/Hi-Point/PBIIK&N /Fiberglass Concepts/Advantage BootsGM) went LO the cushion and passed Lawson for the point position at the end of the third lap. Lawson tried LO come back by but couldn't get the job done and had LO be content with second at the end o f th e five-lap race. Pfetzi ng took th ird as Mike Faria lost his muffler on the final circuit a nd was forced to center green. Referee Irw in Moon rode his ass off and took home first spot in the annual Donkey Derby. Moon actually crossed the lin e second to a loca l disc jockey, but the D.j. had fall en off and remounted, gaining much o f hi s ground on foot. Faria flies at South Bay By Scott Da loisio GARDENA, CA, J ULY 11 Mike Faria powered his trusty Weslake to its second consecutive wi n in the Scratch main event at Ascot South Bay Stadium Thursday night. Faria (Shoe ilTo rco/ O akley/ T ra k Master 'Tires./Tsubaki /Scouy's Muffl er /STP /Kal -Gard /W a cy Armstrong) ca m e out of gat e fo u r and was third on th e start behind leader Al an Christian and Rob Pfetzing. Faria sn uc k by Pfetzing in th e fir st bend and then shot by Christian on the outside when Christian wheelied off the second turn. Christian a lm ost LOok Faria out with hi s wheelie but Faria snuck by . By the time Christian recovered he found himself aired in last place, with Steve Lucero in second spot. Lucero pressured Faria but could not find a way by. Christian. in the meantime, went to work on Pfetzing for third. As they took th e white flag all four riders blasted into turn one within five lengths of ea ch other. They stayed that close all the way to the checkered where you co u ld have thrown a blanket over them. Faria took the win with Lucero on his rear tire while Christian took Pfetzing by inches for third. Gene Woods (7-Up/In-N-Out Burgers/Sboei/Seer Goggles/Penzoi l/Mikuni/Vera's Leathers Jawa) showed some of his vintage form to capture the Handicap main off the 20-yard line. Woods a lmost had a serious problem seconds earlier in his Scratch semi. In that one Woods got tHe ga te and led into turn one where his lef t shoulder popped out of the socket. That sent h im into the turn two crashwa ll and out of the race. His shoulder was popped back in and he was ready for the Handicap main. ' Billy Gray put his GM at the front from the zero on the start over Bobby Ott and Woods. Woods, using the outside line, raced by Oil in turn one on lap two. H e stayed LO the outside a nd LOok the lead from Gray with Ott also getting Gray for second. Woods th en dropped to the pole where he sh ut down Oil'S persistent effo rt s all th e way to the checkered flag. Christi an moved all th e wa y from th e forty for third. For th e seco nd co nsecu tive week Norman Neuman (Ca fe Beverly Hillsi JPjlKal-Gard Weslak e) held back J oe Kreisberg LO tak e home th e win in Second Division. Andy Normrup Alan "Crazy" Christian took the lead at the start of the Scratch main event and never looked back as he rode to his th ird win in less than a month at John LaDouceur's In land Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday night. Christian, fresh off his win in the Freedom Cup Sunday at Carlsbad, came into th e main just minutes after dropping out of th e Handicap main with me ch anical ills. In th e main, Christian (ST P / Va lvo lin e/C irell o Racing/Fiberglass Concepts/Champion /PBI /K&N / Be IIl H i - P o i n t/ Advantage Boots GM ) had absolutely no problems as h e blasted into the lead on the sta rt over Bobby Ott. Tom Burba and Mike Faria. Oil tried to challenge Christian as th ey raced down the back chute but he wheelied and was forced LO back off. Oil recovered and maintained second just behind the red -leathered leader but he parked it in turn four on lap two. That allowed Burba past for second but it also allowed Christian to open up a huge lead. Christian took th e win with lots of room to spare while Oil and Faria sandwiched Burba off the last corner LO take second and third. . Ed i Castro was third on the start and he turned in a fine effort LO constantly thwart the efforts of Brad Oxley and Faria . Finall y, on th e fourth lap, Faria snuck inside the stubborn Castro but that's as fa r as he got. In the end it was Ni col shining at th e head of th e pack for th e win ch ased by Briggs, Faria and Castro . Godden ) slipped into th e lead on th e fin al circ u it a nd won his first-ever IMS main in Third Division a ction. J o h n Dunn LOok second with Greg Nelson third. Junior star Jessee Finch (Speedway Magazine/Scou Goggles/House of Suzuki Triumph /Mom & Dad/Sam Ermolenko/ Arai) turned in a stylish performance to take the Junior Speedway First Division main over Tim Gewecke.
