Hayhurst, Smith ignite Baylands By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA , J U L Y 3 Early Independence Holiday fireworks came in the form of the red hot, m eteoric performances of two infrequent visiting pro-rank rid ers at the Bayl ands motocross facility. A soon-to-be fully reco vered Rodney Smith (Ya m) will be returning to th e motocross wars in Brazi l wh ere h e rides for Shell Yamaha , but until he feels 100%he is going to continued to race in Bay area even ts. Spectacular Dexter Hayhurs t (Kaw) d idn't indicate he has a sponsorship package, bu t his ridi ng indicates he ei th er h as a good one or will be getting one soon. Dexter dominated the 250cc P ro ranks while Smith captured th e Open P ro contest and each put away the competition ' like they had been ra cing on th e ex tremely demanding Bayla nds course wee kly . In moto o ne for the 250cc Pros Eric Mashbi r got into th e first left hand corn er ahead of ever yone, but in th e russel for clear track h e and Danny Bol es ca me togeth er wi th Bol es going down . Oncomi ngriders missed Boles (M o to -X Fox/Team US /Pa lo Alto Yamaha ) and Pa u l Turner Ra ci ng sponsored YZ250. Mashbir kept the lead but the co ntract had sna p p ed off hi s clutch lever. It wa s a n ad m i tted tough ride, but victory wa s th e result for th e Tri Vall ey Honda/Diamond T ree/ Mac 's MOla rs-sponsored CR H onda rider fro m O akland . Second wa s event ua l winner H a yhurst o n h is KX Kawa saki from Redd in g. In the second mota Ma shbir was rea dy wi th a new clutch lever and Bo les had reshaped his bent brak e levers to do battl e again . Th e si x r id er fi eld cha rged into turn one, gal things sorted out without co lli sio n , a nd out came leader J ohn Papol a o n h is Kawasaki . On th e second lap, H ayhu rs t replaced Papo la in front a nd cha llenging from second was Bol es a nd Mashbir. John Da uth (Hon) and Alan Bunk (Ya m ) were not a ble to put t heir m ounts in to th e bat tle u p front , hu t wer e h a vin g a good time with each o th er o ver who wa s go ing 10 in he rit la st pl a ce. In m id-lap o n th e fifth ci rcui t, Boles got under Mashbir in the deep mud rig h t hand er but co u ld not close an y on H ayhurst. Wh en the checke rs ca me o u t, the order was Ha yhurst in h is first Ba yla nd s victory, Boles and th en Mas hbir . The Open Pro ra ce was co n tested between four Pros: Sean Loller(Kaw) Devon Joos (H o n ), Bin Aver- (Kaw) a nd Rod ney Smi th (Ya m ). In the beginning la p s it appeared that the two 125cc riders were going to take th e event, but thev either tired of made mistakes becd u ~e Smit h and Joos bo th found ways by them. There are no lo ng high speed straights a t Ba ylands, but burst of big bo re power ca n be an advantage o ver trying to keep a l2 5cc buzzing a t hi gh rpm . Try aft er rrv by J oos failed 10 ma leria lize in a pa ss o f Smith and fin a ll y, late in eac h ra ce, Joos would slack o ff the th rottle to fini sh a safe second. Sm ith 's left wr ist and fore arm are srill enc a sed in a support brace as h e is recov erin g from surger y. Th e co rrectiv e o pe ra ti on has o bvio us ly been r ig h t and Smith 's recovery is a head of sche d u le. Fa th er a nd son team . Bob an d G eorge Kosovi lka co nt in ue to p er form quit e well at th e weekly program. The senior Kosovilka was a recent parti cipant in th e Po lice Ol ympi c motocross a n d won the Sen ior division. He accomplished th e same feat at Bay lands this evening, riding in the Old Timer Sportsman class aboard his four-stroke H o n da . Son G eorge ran in th e m uch more' co m p etitive 125cc Ju nior class; in wh ich there were 14 entrants. The firs t moto sta rt for Ko sovilka was a disaster; a nd he was lod ged m id -pack and was a ble only to improve slight ly at the end, wh ere he too k fo urth beh ind a Ka wasaki a nd two oth er Hondas. Wi n ner in mota one was R icky Whi te o n his Pro Cycle of Concord sponsored KX , second wen t to hard luck rider o f th e even ing , A lb ert Berends (Han ) because he cra shed a nd DNF the second moto and third wa s grabbed by Pau l Midson (H a n) on his C R . In th e second moto the sta rt was m uc h di fferent and probably has so methi ng to do with what fa ther and son motocrossers talk abou t between motos. White m us t have wondered what super power had overcome Kosovil ka for no matter wha t White tried it didn't work. Koso vilka lead a ll the way to the ch eckers followed by W h i te and Midson. T he win in the second moto cr eated a second p lace overall for the , newly-inspired young H o nda rider Kosovilka. Results BO M INI NOV 9,11 : 1. Kenn y Spence (Yam). BOM INI NOV 12- 16: 1.
