Newell steals GreeleySX By Larry J ohns on GREELEY, CO, J UN E 14 Dave Newell (Kaw) won hi s second 250cc Pro supercross in as many events tonight. He and Albert Firestine (Yam) had . 42 won their respectiv e qualifiers, but wh en th ey hit th e fir st turn in th e m a in , Firestine wash ed out a n d took down a lm os t half th e field. Newell escaped the shambles, but I-t-yearo ld Derek Brown (Kaw), Da ve Wollaston (Suz)and Randy Warren (Yam) were a ll ahead. Before lap one was co m p le te, Wollaston and Warren got past Brown a nd th en Warren did a cla ssic flying W aver th e doubles and dropped wa y back. On th e next lap, Newell took secon d a nd p ressed Wol laston in every turn for the n ext five go- arounds, but \Vollaston was not gi vin g an in ch . Newell finally found a wa y a ro un d with just over .o ne lap to go a n d h ad to hold off Wollaston to th e checkers. Brown put in a solid performance, running a steady third th e whole mota. Bill Perri ton (Kaw ) al so kept his supercross record perfect with his secon d win in th e aocc Experts. In rnoto one, he took th e lead on lap one, afte r Andy Akins (Ya m) went down, a nd ran a way to a n eas y victory. Derek Mi ze (Kaw) put togeth er his best race o f th e seaso n to fini sh second a head of Troy Lessar (Han). Perri ton ga ted third in round two, but took the lead from J ared Ramso ur (Kaw) a t the doubles on th e first lap. H e then gave th e lead back when h e bobbl ed in th e wh oops, but on lap four, h e regained th e lead a t th e doubles onl y to lo se it in th e next turn. On the next circuit, he made hi s third . pass over the doubles and made it stick th is time until th e last lap. He once again lost control in th e whoops just before th e fin ish line a nd a charg ing Atkins stuck a wheel undernea th a t th e checkers. Tim Buchl i (Yam) won th e 125cc Pros with a perfec t I-I tall y. H e took th e lead from Keith Zeffel (Yam) at midpoint o f ro u nd one a nd was in co ntrol the rest o f th e wa y. JUNE a Ed Arnet danced his YZ250 to a co nv inc ing 250cc Pro win a t th is week 's Saddleback Motocross at Perr is. Arnet moved to the lead early in each moto despi te heroic effo rts by H onda rider Greg Zitterkopf. At th e ha lfway point in each race Arnet h ad sett led into a co m forta ble lead as Zit terkopf s trugg led w ith h and lin g p roblems a nd lapped riders. Workin g into th e num ber three slo t a t th e chec ke rs in eac h m o to wa s Yamaha ride! Mike Ca rlo followed by Bill Scott (H o n ) a nd Matt Tedde r (H a n) who is trying to fight back from a wri st in jury. Kawasaki -mounted Jim Perry made short work of th e 250cc Intermediate class by winning both motos ah ead of Honda rider Loren Pochirowski and third p lace David Jennings (Han). Ulf Johansson wicked his Honda to the h ol eshot in both 250cc Novice class races a nd lengthen ed his lead throughout the motos. Suzuki ri der Greg Carson gave ch ase from the number two slo t but ca me up short as Martin Sanett m oved his Honda to the third overall position for the day. " Wro n g Way" Ron Way lived up to hi s Old Timer number one plate today as h e used a 2-1 tally to earn top Old Timer Expert honors with Yamaha-mounted KurtSofka taking second and John Tartaglia pl acing third on hi s three-year-old Maico. Dave Mill er dominated the Vet Expert race. Mill er pushed his Kawasa ki to new Vet limits a s he held off a determined Alan Olson (Hon) to win both mOlOS.
