JUNE 28 Yamaha-mounted Steve West took top honors in th e 250cc Intermediate class tonigh t a t Continental Motosport Club n ight m otocro ss. H onda rider David Potter charged o u t o f th e gate and led th e field for most o f the fir st lap . but h e sta lled h is bik e a n d let West . Craig Westergaard (Yam) a nd Chris Bo ice (H on ) slip by. O n th e next la p Westergaard a lso sta lled hi s machine in th e ro ckers. givi ng Bo ice th e opportu nity to move up to seco nd . By the tim e h e go t back o u t o n th e track he was a la p down . West cro ssed the fin ish lin e wi th a comfort a ble lead. Boi ce was in second and Westergaard was th ird . In th e seco nd mo to Yama ha ride r Kenn y Maddux led the pa ck o u t o f the ga te and th rough th e first la p . West was breathin g down , Maddux 's neck a nd Potter was ru nn in g righ t beh in d West. O n th e seco nd lap West made h is m ove and got by Maddux for th e lead. By th e fo urth lap Bo ice had m oved up to pass Potter a nd p ushed hi m back to fou rth: Wes held hi s lea d to th e checkered flag wi th Maddux maintain in g h is position in seco nd place an d Bo ice comi ng in th ird . West took th e overall with his two wins . Bo ice was seco n d overa ll wi th 2-3 a nd Westergaard was th ird wi th 3-5. Fo rty-six rid ers showed u p to do battle in th e 125cc Beg inn er class. In th e thi rd division Bo b Tatom a nd h is Ka wasaki shot o u t o f th e ga te and into th e fi rst tu rn . O n th e seco nd la p Ta tom went do wn in th e slic k turn a t th e fini sh line a nd jasper too k th e lead . Laidler moved to seco nd an d beg an tak ing some heat fro m T onrod Rodriq ues (Yam) . Rod riq ues push ed Laid ler for two la ps before h e was a ble to get by and j aspe r h ad a leng th y lead a nd took th e flag all by himself. Rodriques was seco nd and Laidl er was third. In the second moto T atom was determined to ma ke up for his mi sta ke in th e first moto a nd he led from th e drop of th e ga te to the checkered flag. Rodriques cha llenged him on th e last la p but cou ldn't make th e pa ss. Third p lace was passed from Tim Cross (H o n) to Do ug la ss Brook (H on) . bu t when the flag came ou t it was Steve Fish er (Suz) who had man euvered into th ird . The overall was ta ken by Rodriq ues with two second p lace finishes . Tatom took second overa ll with a 6-1 whi le La idler was third 3-4. Asco t ace Todd Peterson led th e 500c Pro s o ff th e li ne and was o n h is way to an other victory when. o n th e fifth lap. h e fouled a plug and h ad to . push h is H onda back to the pits. Sha wn T ra cy (Hon) took over firs t whil e Mik e McM ill en (Ho n) a n d Cr ai g Hofmeister (Hon) had a very close racing going for seco nd . Tra cy took th e flag with McMiIlen edgi n g o u t Hofmeister for seco nd. McMillen took th e h ol eshot in th e seco nd moto , but by th e en d o f the first lap Peter son had overtaken him a n d built up a s u bsta ntia l lead. McMillen . in seco n d. and Tracy, in third. pl a yed wha t a m ou nted to four laps of " bu m per bik es." One hundred twen ty-five ride rs turned ou t for th e po ints -pa yin g event from a ll five sur- ro u nding sta tes. a nd were p leased to find a virtuall y du st-free track to co m pe te o n. Dave Molder took hi s Yamaha Shop YZ490 to th e overa ll win in the O pen Pro class for th e a fternoon , th en Iollow ed th at up with th e top overa ll spot in th e 250cc Pros . breaki ng Bill y Stork's virtual strangleho ld o n the division for on lv th e seco nd time th is yea r. Stork returned in the 125cc Pro ac tion to take his Budweiser/R ice Cycles H on da prepared by Rex Co n rad to the top overa ll posi tion over LeeVern Berr y. Mol der began his Open Pro dom ination from the start of th e first moto, goi ng out in to the lead quickl y as Tony Ulrich . Kim Bendigo . Perry Bicek a nd L yn n H yde tra iled . Mo lder soo n p u lled awa y from the pack a nd rode a n effo rt less ride in to th e chec kers . goi ng u nchalle n ged th e entire way. U lric h a nd Ben d igo h ad sett led into th e two-three spots. bu t Bicek was charging up from the back. Coming into a tight right hander, Bicek tried to stu ff h is CR ins ide of Bendi go . but Bendigo did not budge. Coming out of th e turn th e two collided hard , and Bendigo th en budged. right into th e ground. Both Bicek a nd H yde went by a nd the duo reeled in Ulrich within a lap. In the very sa me corner a lap later . Bicek again stuffed h is way ins ide in the turn and once agai n th e two riders co ll ided lea ving th e turn. The results were a lso th e sa me. but this time U lri ch lay on th e grou nd as both Bicek a nd H yde went th ro ugh. Wi th Molder well in co m mand. H yde a nd Bicek battled between the mselves for the remain ing laps. but it was Bicek coming in beh in d Molder for seco nd . Ben d igo went by U lrich for fou rt h an d Ul rich ma naged to fin ish fifth. At the sta rt of ro und two Molder agai n took o ff wi th the hol esh ot, bu t Bicek wa s left wtih a ga te tha t never dropped . As the pack ro de o ff. Bicek h ad to p low through h is ga te to cha se af ter the leaders. Molder again q u ickly took control and never went cha llenged while H yde had th e seco nd spot ahea d o f U lric h and Bend igo . Bicek began a h ard cha rge to th e front a nd by th e la te laps wa s by both Bendigo a n d Ulrich . bu t co u ld not reel in H yde in time. Molder flashed ac ros s th e line for th e m ot o a n d overa ll win as H yde took seco nd in both ca tegories . Bicek had to sett le for a dejected third whil e Ulrich fourth this time an d Bendigo nursing a sic k bike in for fifth. O penin g u p the first 250cc Pro rno to , Stork took h is Budweiser /Rice Cycles H onda into th e lead with Molder beh ind as well as Tony Ulrich. Curt H yde. Kevin Forrester a nd Brian G eorge. The leadi ng duo began to string a wa y from the pack as U lri ch an d H yde fought fiercel y for third. Although Molder stayed ri gh t with Stork. he cou ld not find a way aro u nd the leader for th e 10 laps o f th e race a nd Stork took the chec kered fla g fi rs t. Mo lde r ro Iled in a few seco nds beh ind whi le Ulrich wr estl ed the third spot away from H yde. Forrest er ro u nde d o u t the top five follow ed by Zuhr. In ro u n d two, Molder took th e h ol esh ot as Stork was pinned to th e o u tside p oll in th e corn er a nd sta rte d n ext to las t as the pa ck ro lled away.
