Christian tops Ventura By Bill Locey VENTU RA, CA, J U LY 2 Alan Christi a n j o ined Sam Erm ol enko as the only rider to w in a m a in a t each of th e five south la n d tracks when he took 28 th e Scra tch mai n T uesd ay night at the Ventura Racewa y. It was C hristian 's first T uesda y nigh t win since 1980, and 17 career wi ns a t Ventura , good for fifth o n the a ll -time list. Mark Dw yer won th e Ha ndicap ma in for hi s first-ever Ventura tro p h y. T he re was an incredi ble 14 First Divisio n scra tches, makin g for p lenty o f program juggl ing an d four fo urman Han d icap hea ts. As usu a l, the ba ck-yardage riders ma de short wor k of those in fro nt an d five rid ers in the Hand icap fina l started o n th e 40 or furth er. Dwyer started on the 30 ahead o f the pa ck and man aged to keep them a ll beh ind. Bu t it wa sn 't easy , as Ed Castro a pp lied th e most pressure. Cas tro took tu rns passing and bei ng passed by Ro b Pfetzing a nd Bobby Ott. T h ree riderrs - Pfe tzing , Ott a nd Shaw n McCon nell - made both mains. O tt too k over th e second spot in track poi nts and McConnell im.. p roved to fourth. In Scra tch racing, bot h Ch ristia n and Ott made it to the main un beaten. Christian got the gate in the ma in , but O tt stayed right on his tai l, co ntinuously threa ten ing to pass on the o u tsid e. A small bo bb le in tu rn two was a ll it took for McConnell to grab second, but there was n o ca tch ing Christian , who was wea ring new blindin g-or ange lea th ers.. Seco nd Division opened the even ing's festivi ties wi th p lenty of crashes, incl udi ng p articu la rl y scary o nes involving Dave Wen dl an d t and th en Chris Mistretta - neither was seriously h urt. In the main , Ku rt Markha m enjoyed h is Divisio n T wo deb u t for a coup le o f laps then went too wide a nd jimm y Ge nti le blasted by to tak e th e trophy fo r th e second stra ig h t week. It was a ll Faria again as he ran away fro m th e pac k. King and Christian became em broi led in a war for seco n d wi th Kin g holdin g down the spot until he hoo ked u p o n the back ch u te on th e la st lap a nd drifted to th e wall. Bri gg s kept up th e p ressure a ll th e wa y bu t he co u ldn ' t fin d ach in k in Ayers armo r an d had to sett le fo r a clos e seco n d -p lace finish . Northrup stayed in third with C hristia n gett ing fourth.
