Aft er a terrible start, h e finished second in moto o ne behind Jim Mitch ell (H a n ). Mitchell a lso o verca me a poor sta rt , tak ing th e lead fro m Albert Firestine (Yam ) by mid-mote. Kyle took the second m ota lead by lap two and held off Firestine and Mitchell for th e duration . Dave Newell (Kaw), a not he r clas s points lea der, helped his ca use by going I -I in th e Open Pros. Us ua l ch all enger Kyle was having suspension problems a l l day and wa s never a factor. However, Newell had a ll he could handle with two riders who . en tered th eir fir st Open competition of the season. In th e seco nd m ota, Surratt slid o u t in th e first turn , and in a specta cu lar cha rge , he went fro m last to seco n d in o n ly six laps. In th e fir st 2S0cc P ro mot a Surratt led from th e d rop o f th e ga te . Mik e Baker (Yam) , H onda r id er Br ia n Ma n ley a nd M-Sta r-m ounted Pe te Murray were close beh ind . By th e fourth lap Surrat t had a heal thy lead a n d Manley had slip pe d by Bak er 10 push h im ba ck 10 th ird. On th e la st lap Manley cl osed to within striking d istan ce of Su rra tt, but Surra tt h eld o n to hi s lead a n d to ok th e [irst -moto w in. Baker mainta in ed his pos ition in third a n d Murra y fin ish ed fo u rt h . T h e seco n d-more sta rt was a carbon copy o f th e [ir st , with S u rra tt shooting OUI o f th e sta rt ing gate a nd blasting a ro u nd th e fir st tu rn . Manley was not go in g to let Su rra tt bu ild up a big lead as h e had done in th e first rnoto . H e stayed right o n Su rratr 's ta il and pushed him hard th e wh ol e race. Murray, Ron T u rn er (Ca g) and Dave Graff (H a n) had a fierce race going for third. On th e last lap , Murray pulled awa y from T urner a nd Graff and installed himself firmly in third. Surratt and Manl ey fought right 10 the fin ish line w ith Surratt go in g across th e victor , taking the overa ll w in . Manley's 2-2 ea rned him seco n d overall and Murray 's 4-3 gave ·h im third. Eric Casa s (Kaw) got the hol eshot in th e first l2S cc Intermediat e m ota. Steve Sequeira (Han) a nd Honda rider Chris Wallis, from Hickory Creek , T exa s, were in tow. All three riders stayed very close together, On the third lap Wallis passed Sequeira and started putt ing pressure on th e leader, Casas. Wallis was never a ble 10 catch Casas a nd had 10 settle for a second. Sequeira ca me in third and R a n d y Menighan (Han) finish ed four th. In th e second moto Casas had some problems and ca me off th e line dead last. John G arcia (Han) led th e pack out o f the gate. Wallis was second and Kaw asaki pi lot Jason Newman rounded out the top three. On the fourth la p Wallis pass ed Garcia , moving him back to third. Meanwhi le Casa s had fought his way up from la st to fifth. H is I- S finish put him seco nd overa II, beh ind Wallis, who fini sh ed 2-1 . Newman' s S-2 gave him th ird. Kawasaki rider Chris McGee dominated th e SO Occ Jun ior class. In th e fir st m o ta h e had suc h a lead tha I he h ad th e lu x ury of mak in g a m istake (ba il ing ), getting up, a n d sli ll m a inta in ing a formidable lead. J ames Dunken sat o n the pole for th e m ain in N ovi ce co m pe ti tio n but rode in midpack orr the line . w h ile Servo, N avlor, Keith Barnhardt (H -D)and Patri~ia Lyons (Yam) filled th e to p five slots on lap one. Serv o and hi s Husqvarna quickl y disappeared from th e rem aining co ntestants a nd rode a ra ce of his own wh ile a three-way figh t for second devel oped between Barnhardt, Naylor and Dunken at the half. Barnhart settled into th e p osition until Dunken made a late-in-the-race rail y to move into seco nd with a lap to go. Needless to say, Dunken 's rally fell sh o rt by severa l bikelengths and Sevo took th e win, which wa s a first for th e Husqva rna-supported rider. Second went to Dunken while Ba rnhard t. Nay lor . and Gary were third through fifth . . Bo oth a n d Robb Blagg (H a n 600) were involved in a horrendous cra sh on the first la p o f th e Junior main event wh ich ca u sed a rest art and put leader Zirbel and Albee in th e 1-2 spots in a 'sin g le-file rest art. Zirbel, Albee and R oose fill ed th e 1-2-3 spo ts for entire main while Terry Wahl (C A) and Horban moved into the top five , but would gel no closer. The onl y ch a nge in the ac tio n ca me on the last la p when Zirbel allowed Albee p assin g ro om co m ing down th e hill which gave Albee th e checkered £la g fo r the win. Roose rode well enough fo r third o ver Wahl, Horban and Yamah a SO O-mou nt ed Danny Ca in, who was sixth .
