Then, heading n orth on Eas t Freeman Ca nyon , th e tra il got smoothe r bu t tighter through Steerbones T rail, wh ere spee d bumped to 24 mph . T he follo wing Old Doe and Sa lt lick T rails got real tight , a nd found a few desert-steeped enduro riders o ver th e side. But most were a ble to ca tch up in th e scen ic Wheatfield T rail sectio n or before th e " Arrowhea d Cult" sign. Back up to a ltitude o n th e Mesa Trail , th e day's fir st sp ecia l hit a t 10.1 miles a t 30 mph , where " o ne seco nd " Lowell Spiva burned this chec k by (his usu al ) o ne second . His 9.469 was still good for fir st 250cc AA/V , and sixth o vera ll. Speed then d ropped to 18 mph a t Pipel ine Road heading west to Edi so n Ca nyo n . After a brief six m ph speed o n a downhill , riders p ick ed up a backbone trail a t 18 m ph into a field check a t 24.9 mi les. H eading west through Sterling Ca n yon , the co u rse got in to hi gher eleva tio n sce nery for 8.6 miles o n Tej on Trail a t 12 mph and de sert cact us wa s replaced with mountain p in es. Though m ost riders sta ted it shou ld have been a t 15 mph, severa l more riders, a ppa rent ly unaccustomed 10 mounta in ridin g , went off th e serpentine trail. Down at L ong Dav e Road came th e fir st of three free times (as o p posed to resets). An easy putt down 10 Lockwood Creek and a nine m inute free time a llo wed riders to frol ic in th e strea m before a ttac king th e Lockwood Creek boulder patch. Th ough Donni e Sirnmone's forth co mi ng tiebreaker ch eck-i n wa s a t the beginning of th e 36 mph special test (24.8 miles), a very large number o f riders burned it. Some, like th e stra wberry farm er Ferro bo ys (John a nd Mike ), by a cos tly two minutes or more.
