Race a ll night and day . Big road bikes thundering against the dawn co lored sky. Artis t Jeff (Gunny ) Gundlach captures that image in the . first of a series of very limited edition fine art p rints. This is no "poster," although it may look like a poster that never was, in a world raceenthusiasts dream of. It was painted by the artist using a new technique of fine art printmaking ca lled " Mvlagra fy." T h is produces an image so fine that you can see the artist's pencil or bru sh strokes under a magnifying glass. There is no microscopic dot pat tern like you find on reproduction prints. Gunny drew the pict ure o n clear sheets of Mylar, separating the five co lors as he went a long (artis ts can do . tha t). Then he £lew from his home in Nort h Caro lina to the studio of Blue Berr y Press in California. Blu e Berr y is a pet project of Charles and Sharon C layton who also p ub lish Cycle News. It is one of the few, if not the only printing firm that specializes in Mylagrafy. The Mylar sheets that Gunny drew on are turned directly into sensitive printing plates wi th no intervening negative stage. T his is what makes Mylagrafy differentfrom ordinary lith o or offset printing. T hese positive process plates then. one for each color, are mounted, one at a time, on a-2li-to n H a rr is offset printing press. Gunny mixes the permanent ink and .applies it, via the press, to the most expensive Archive paper until he is satisfied that the co lor is j us t right. Then the remaining sheets are run through and "painted" tha t color. Gunny cha nges a nd reworks h is image on the Mylars u n til he is satisfied. Many .imperfectly p rinted sheets are junked until. fina lly 140 near pe rfect prints a re finished. These Gun ny curates and signs. T hey are o ffered for sa le to rea ders of Cycle News for about the price of a good picture frame. T hey do dese rve to be malted and framed and dis p layed as you would any other original fine art p rint.
