Darley dashes to GPwin By Clark Emery HURON, CA, MAY 19 Racing today took on a differ ent twist with a just-for-fun Grand P rix race being held before a major seven race summ er series starts. Hour-and-a-half long races complete with a LeMans type dead-engine sta rts were the order of the day as Atas cad ero's Bill Darley took command of the lead of th e 250cc combined clas s with Ri ck Mattos from Los Ban os 'seco n d , and Suzuki rider Dave Zollo a clo se third. Coming around th e bend in front of the main spec ta to r section , a ll three riders went orr the tra ck and got entangled with the surrounding tra ck banners. Unfamiliarity with the GP course was th e culprit. Wh en a ll three rest arted , it was Zollo in front, Mattos second, and Darley third. One lap later, Mattos a ga in went off the track, giving second to Darley. At th e hal£way ma rk , Zollo suddenly took a fall in a rocky Ieft-hander, remounting back in first , but giving ground 1O Darley. Mattos was som e distance back with no goggles and a sore shou lder holding him back. At the o ne hour mark. Zollo had to make a p it stop for gas, giving the lead 1O Da rley . At the checkered fla g it wa s Darley out front in front with Zo llo in second, never recov er ing [rom his gas pit stop. Mattos pulled up in . third place. In the Old Timers clas s, San Jose 's Ri ck .S tasch took command o f th e lead for three laps as Kawa sak i rider T on y La cugo worked hi s way up from a bad sta rt 10 pass Stasch in th e back sect ion o f th e co urse. MAY 19 Craig Stanaway needed 'two fla wl ess rnotos to h a ve any hopes of beating Da vid Bailey, bu t he came up wi th the performance he needed to beat the former champion. The two put together an exciting battle in the second mota a fter Stanaway won the first moto handil y. The second moto, however, was a different story as Bai ley seemed intent on pulling out a win over Stanaway. The Honda factory star followed in Stanaway 's shadow [or th e entire race an d saved his final 'move for th e last la p . His cho ice was the downhill double jumps and he pa ssed Stana wa y clean ly in mid-air. The move ' didn ' t last long a s Stanawa y repassed in th e next corner to win th e mota and the overall. In the 125cc Amateur class, J amie Munson took hi s Eri c Siminsonprepared Kawasaki 10 a perfect oneo ne tally [or the overall win . Munson had a brief ch a llenge [rom Yam ahamounted Kevin Logsdon, but Munson soo n took co m ma n d. The seco nd rnoto was much th e same with Mun son pulling th e ho leshot and mot oring to an easy win . The 80cc Beginner class saw some exciting racing with Danny Whitsett putting his Kawasaki into th e top slo t in turn on e. J ef[ Edison foll owed closely and th e two had a good race go in g unril the third la p wh en Whitsett parted com pa n y [rom his rid e over a set o f double jumps. His [all gav e Ed ison the lead he never surrendered . David Fost er took seconda fter moving up from a mid-pack stan .
