On unday, 55 1 racers showed up to see who would w in th e o ldest Hare a nd H o u nd around . Fo ur loops confronted th e riders wi th loop one (the sand ) being 2~.-1 miles ~ong, loop two (th e desert ) being 30 mil es, loop three (m o un ta in) was 2~ .6 m iles and loop fo ur (a lso moun tain ) was 28.3 mi les. At 10:29 a.m. the [la gged dropped on th e dead engine sta rt sen ding th e cloud o f hung ry riders tow ard s th e bo m b. Nevada 's Kevin Welch (Gag) picked th e fas tes t Iine a n d had the lead 10 the smoke bomb. As th e co urse headed so u th a nd mad e a sweep ing right turn two miles o u t, it was Shawn G erber, Harvey Howard and Brad S t ~o ng . The three were running one m tl.e a head o f. fourth pl ace Rich ie G amer at th e Iive mil e m ark . At th e en d of th e sa nd loo p , Gerber had co vered it in 43.22 on his KTM while ~oward (44:44), Stro ng (44:50) a nd Ga mer (46:30) foll ow ed . On th e seco nd loop. Ger ber got th e " Cree k J inks" a nd endoed losin g bo th th e lead a nd h is fro nt brake. H ow ard rook over th e top spot a nd held it unril th e en d of p it row when h e went on to loop four in stead of loop three. Strong th en took o ver first pl ace. Meanwh ile, back in th e pack Scot H arden was mo vin g h is Husk y up as wa s Welch. H ow ard recovered from hi s m iscu e a nd ca ugh t Strong on loop three. but th e "Creek Jinks" ca u gh t Howard a nd he was unable to recov er. . On th e th ird loop, Strong led with a 2:04 with Howard secon d at 2:08 and Harden (2: 11), Gainer (2: 12) a nd Scott G erber (2: 13) following. The fourth loop wa s a jinks for many. but the cream of th e crop mastered it perfect.ly. The well -conditioned cha rged whil e th e bulk of th e pack were just holding on to fini sh . Three hours and 30 minutes a fter th e start, Strong emerged as th e winner. It was his second Ch erry Creek win in a row and he became o n ly th e second to ever accomplish thi s feat.
