In th e main h e had a 20-yard h ead sta rt o n th e rest of the pack and too k the lead from the outset over Gene Woods and Mark Dwyer. Woods, showing some of hi s vintage style, qui ckl y clos ed the gap o n the talented rooki e and attemp ted to get by on th e outside. He couldn't get the job do ne th ere and Dwyer sn uck up o n th e ins id e and took o ver seco nd a t th e end o f the third circ u it. Dwyer then closed in on N ico l and gave it hi s bes t sho t on the inside but Nicol was equal to th e test and h eld h im back a ll the way to the checkered.
