Conventional wisdom has it that a motorcycle takes at least
a yearor two before it can be truly competitive.
Yet the newYamaha FZ750 required only 56 days to win its
first major race.
On May 5, in fact, Bruce Sass grabbed the Mountain Roadracing Association's Open Superbike race aboard an FZ.
Three weeks later, anotherFZ ridden byjimVreeke took
RoundThree ofthe AFMlKerkerWest Coast Superbike Series.
And the following week,Team Speedboys ran offwith
the prestigious WERA National Endurance Series.
None ofwhich comes as much ofa surprise to the engineers atYamaha
They builtthe engine with five valves per cylinder instead
of two. Or even four. Canted the cylinders 45°forward. And
utilized special downdraft
carburetors.
So much for conventional
it
wisdom.
