At the start of the 250cc J uruor class, Kawasaki rider Vanderpool had the lead, but close behind was H asel don who was putti ng on the pressure and trying to sneak his front wheel by w he never the chance arose. Va nderpool. however, kept .s la m m i ~ g the door shut in his face. Some d istance behi nd, just cruising along in . third was Greg Hunter. A large cushion of space existed between Hunter and the rest of the pack. On th e last lap Haseldon , tired of looking lik e he was connected 10 Vanderpool 's rear fender, tried a banzai pass over a jump for th~ lead, but instead nailed Vanderpool m the back with his front wheel. A few feet in front of the ch eckered flag, Vander. pool su dden ly pulled O\:er and slO\~ly crawled off his KX250 m great pam. Haseldon, perhaps not wanting a victory by defeat , pulled off th e track a nd waited for Vanderpool 10 get go ing again , but Vanderpoo! a ngerly wa ved h im o n to take the wm. Near th e end of th e race Nelson low sided in a dark comer. retaining his second place, but giving Ellis the room 10 pull some yardage and go on 10 win the moto. Nelson went on 10 fi nish second. Come round two, Ellis jumped ahead with the hol esho t, bu t bogged his Yamaha in the first corner. Nelson saw h is chance and sli d around the outside an d into fi rst. Ellis was in second and Boles in third. As a ll three riders tried to go into a corner three abreast, Nelson went down glvm~ firs t to Ellis. From this point on, Ellis nailed his Yamaha 's th ro tt le an d took off from the pack , giving him room 10 cut some of the fastest lap times o f the night. Meanwhile, back at the race for second and third place, Sparks, who had to work his wa y up from a nothe r mediocre start , was now in fourth a nd trying to put a m ove?n Bol es for third. Tony Flores got th e lions share in th e l25cc clas s, Sha wn McCorin in th e 250cc and J on Nel son was the top gun in the 500cc class. Justin Own bey, a Suzuki rider in th e BOcc (9- 11) Mini class put tog ether two perfect rid es to ace his cla ss. Another h eavil y represented clas.s wa s th e BOcc ( 12- 16) Mini class o f whi ch th ere were three sta rs. Kenni e McGrath sta rted to have o ne of hi s spectacu la r outings. but after he won th e fir st moto he didn 't do very good III the second. In mot o two it wa s Jason Bordelons' turn to shine and he put together a fin e ride 10 get th e checkers first. Steady Adam Fi sher seu led for tw.o individual second places aboard his Ka wa sa ki KX from San Jose. Jerome Smith, a popular young racer o~t of O a kl a n d , put h is quick Yamaha m to the lead during both rnotos of the 12-16 year Junior Mini bikers and never looked back. Todd Black beca me the first class wi n ner crowned as he p icked up a first ove rall on the day by virt ue of a third and a first. T o ugh est competi tion on the day ca me fro m Yamaha rider Bill Pell et iere ou t of San Jose. Pelleriere got the holes hot and held it for two of the five laps before losing the poi nt to Alive Carlos on a H onda. Georg Heare was on Pell eriere's rear wheel for only 100 yards before he endoed and detuned himself for the day. Another recepient of a first place season trophy was Veteran Ma~ter Mike Lane. Lane's second and ftfth place finishes were a tad out of chara cter for him but he has not full y recov ered from an ea rly season hand injun'. jerry Caton, now aboard a H onda, worked past Lane in the first rnot o to win it. In the second rnoto Du ane Hughes. on yet a no ther CR. got it pointed in th e right direction 10 tak e an ea rly lead. H e a n d Lane co llidedin th e fir st moto a nd although Lane fini shed well , his back bore th e marks o f th e fall . In the bailie between Hughes and Cat on for the lead th ey must hav e forgotten about Michael Alarcon a n d hi s CR. Alarcon fir st got by Ca to n th en Hugh es. May 29 Nearl y record entries in the I 25ccand 250cc Beginner classes made for cro wded and spectacular racing at Baylands Racewa y Park a nd th e ni ght motocross ac tio n seeme d to ce n ter on th e a bove two classes. Eri c Johnson did have to g et by ea rly leader Alben Bre~ds on hi s CR H onda but aft er that I! was sm oo th motoring to th e finish. The second m oto was a bit different as Johnson got o u t 10 a n ea rly lead. On th e la st lap. Jeff Bernhardt tried a n ae ria l pass th at was a lm ost successful but it ca used Bernhardt to fall off and h is YZ Yamaha attached itself to Johnson's bike. Johnson ,,:as able!? keep both bikes in th e upright POSItion unti l he stopped and pushed away the offernding tag-along. Bern hardt was not seriously , injured bu t was not able to finish the moto , J o h n son was early 10 p ick u p the first pla ce trophy a nd was o ne of th e first to arrive at the after race pany. The o ther new sta ndout o f th e eveni ng was 2~Occ Beginner. George Miranda o n hI S RM Suzu ki out of Red wood Ci ty. T he class has be~n show ing a grea t deal of ev.en ly distri buted talent o f late, inc ludi ng: J ohn Si lva an d Gene Cardella. In m o to one J oseph Abrams (Yam) got into the h igh speed first corner ahead of th ~ 16 riders in the class. In the quick action that followed Rich Ba ttaglia struck his H o nda int o the battle wi th the front running duo, Abrams and Don Mendenhall (Suz). Unfortunately, for Banaglia a spill p ushed him back to a n eventual 12th place. The shuffle between the leaders was finally sorted out just a half lap befor~ t hechecker~ when Miranda forced his R M Suzuki past Mendenhall. Silva hung on wit~ his Yamaha a nd Cardella was a bit o ff pack back in fourth . In moto number two John Silva blasted into th e lead chased bv Miranda and Battag lia . It just wa sn't a good !light for Battaglia as th e H onda rider had a no the r DNF. Miranda tried severa l times 10 ge t by Silva o n th e wide and so ft co urse. bu t co u ld n ' t get Silva to m ak e a mistak e or backofLIn the end it was Mir anda with th e best overa ll sco re a n d Sil va wa s second on th e even ing.
