No on e else was a ble to combi ne rid in g a nd time keepi ng to a bet ter resu lt. Time keepi ng was especially cri tica l because th e CERA did no t p ro vide ro ute sheets. Ins tead, speed cha nges and resets were posted a lo ng the co urs e. Four or five years ago, most D-36 en duro s were run this way, but thi s is th e o n ly run in recent years th at h as n ot provided ro u te sheets. Many 'A' riders th ought it wa s fun and challenging, but most 'B's a nd 'C's were thorough ly confused a nd did o nly ru dimen tar y time keep in g or no ne at a ll. With ma ny riders no t time keeping, th is lead to problems for many of th ose who were. At eac h sp eed change th e time keeping riders wo uld stop a nd reset th eir clocks and odometers or ma ke so me nota tions . Wh ile they we re doin g th is, slower riders who weren ' t ti me keeping co u ld pass them . T his wou ldn't hav e been so bad excep t for th e fact th a t th e trai ls were very dusty a nd gelling aro u nd slower riders was difficult a nd dangero us. Luck was a big factor. R iders lu cky eno ugh to be on th e first mi n ute in their class ha d a decided advantage. T he co u rse was wel l la id out and we ll m a rked . The trai ls were fun a nd interes ting. H owever, th e speed averages a n d! or lack o f enough resets ma de for an event tha t was often more of a hare scrambles th an a n en d u ro . Even so me cl u b mem bers expressed th is co ncern . Wi th th e dust a n d four wheel trafficon the co urse t here were so me very da n gero u s situa tions . T his a nd the lack of ro u te sh eets may cos t th e club some entries next year. The us ual wa ter-resistan t appare l needed in nort hw est Washington was left beh ind and pads & jerseys were don ned w ith score ca rds taped to th e fenders. Beca use of th e low percentage of fin ish ers last yea r, due to th e mon soons that turned the tra ils to Iootpeg deep ruts and exposed tree roo ts diffi cu lt to ride over, th e Skagit club worked ha rd to lav o u t a trai l n etwork that wou ld hold up. There were a lot o f a rro ws, so me had im porta nt information on th em th at the rid ers failed to read, ca using co n fusion and wrong turns. As a result, chec ks four , five, six , seven a nd eig h t were thrown o u t in the A a nd B co u rse . Ch eck th ree wa s th ro wn out in th e C and Sportsman cla sses. All classes had a 9:00 a .m . starting tim e w ith A and B a nd Seniors going on a separate course from th e C and Sports ma n riders. Joh n Nielsen (H us) put in a good rid e a nd m ade the Webfoot his fou rt h first p lace overall wi n th is season. Niel sen 's four-point loss was followed by th e lu cky num ber seven. Ron Clizbe, a lso r id in g a Husk y, aced out Wa yne Keezer on a Husk y wi th a seven- point loss a t th e tie-brea ke r to fin ish seco nd a nd thi rd in th e AA cla ss. R ick Edga r, o n a Ka wa saki , bea t ou t Jim Hickman a t th e tie breaker w ith a seven -po int loss in the 200cc A class. It was a good run for those lea rn in g to keep score a n d those th at feel a n en d uro shou ld n ot be a n a ll out race.
