Virgin Run Hare Scrambles no t knowing he h ad won the race. " I was really surprised" stated Hallgath . " I tho ught Ashcraft was in front of me. I n ever passed him and I kn ew he was in front of me early ." H usky's Da n Ashcraft 26 did have th e ea rly lead but got lost early in th e first loo p a nd had to hustle to get back into th e top 10. Ha ll gath 's w in was his second overa ll in a row a nd 12th in a row for th e 250cc class victo ry. H e wanted to thank Malcolm Smith Motorcycles for p ro viding him with h is XC250 Husky , Answer Prod u cts a n d Silkol en e. Fourth o vera ll went to th e " Animal ," Chris Crandall o n h is 560cc ATK four-stroke. " I' ve really been working on m y starts " said Crandall. " It's harder to sta rt th e ATK than a two- stroke but thi s time 1 had a perfect one-kick start and wh at 1 thought was a g reat bomb run onl y to get to th e bomb and find a wh ole bunch o f riders a hea d o f me! 1 was reall y di scouraged bUI 1 ju st kept p luggi ng aw ay and moved up by th e finish . 1 bail ed o nce an d tore m y jersey up but o the rwise 1 had a good rid e." Fif th overa ll went to Kenny Pa rry (Yam) who has been putting togeth er so me co ns istent finish es lately. " I was cha sing him wh en 1 mi ssed a turn and got lost. 1 wa s a litt le bummed o ut." Th ere was so me talk about disqualifyi n g so me riders for takin g th e wash after th e bomb instead of sta ying right o n th e co urse whi ch ran parall el but no decision wa s reac he d at th e race. T he o fficia l results will tell. Cha rlie Morris Jr. (H us) managed an eighth overa ll in sp ite of riding m ost of th e seco nd loo p with a fla t rear tir e. Morris is one of th ose young rid ers waiting in the wings that will "a ll of a sudden" start winning overa lls . The other member of Team Husky , Dan Smith punch ed a hol ein th e case o f his 500XC Husky and limped back to th e pits. " So far it's just not my year " said th e number o ne plate hol der. ' 'I' m having th e kind of year that Ash craft did last year ." First I 75cc in was John Braasch (Kaw) who beat a new 175cc class rider by the name of Brett H owell ( K aw ), Braasch h ad a scar e when he ran out of gas just 100 yards from the finish! " I had some gas with me and 1 tore off my fann y pa ck to get ir off . a n d dumped it in real quick '" said Braa sch. ','1 was in su ch a hurrv that I left my fanny pack laying back th ere! Luckily I had a bi t of a lead ." H ow ell wa s really pumped. " Riding th e sma ll bikes have put th e fun ba ck into rac ing for me" said Howel l. " I had a ba ll out th ere today. " Vicki SCOll (Ya m) brok e J oanna Brownell's (H us) win strea k by taking th e Woman Expert cla ss win. "I was chasin g Joanna wh en she go t stuck on a hill on th e second loo p " sta ted a jubilant Scott. " I made it up a nd over befor e she co u ld recov er a nd beat her to th e finish." SCOll thanked SCOll'S Sco oter Servi ce for their hel p. First Vet was Jim Robin son (Yam) . "That was a tough co urse" said Robinson. " It wa s sort o f fast but rough en o ugh to keep th e spe ed s down." Senior rider Jim Bringhurst (H us) rode his first ra ce since gelling hurt last February. " I fell pretty good " said Bringhurst. " I though t my leg wou ld give me trouble but it felt fine.
