Consumer Product Safety Commission ATV Task Force Chief Engineer Roy Deppa is, acording to ATV Task Force Chairman Nick Marchica, a motorcycle enthusiast. As Marchica recently told it, Deppa owns two British bikes but doesn't enjoy more modem machines because "they shift on the wrong side ." The switch to left-hand shifting for all motorcycles was, of course, mandated by the federal government over a decade ago. The iro ny ? In a memo regarding A TVs. dated May 3,1984. Deppa wrote "There may, upon further investigation. be a need, or at least a benefit, to be gained from standardization ofthe controls with those of motorcycles."
