During th e first lap Surber rook th e lead from Arnold, with MeCl ain passin g H erm ann and Arnold p utting him abou t five seco nds behind Sur ber. McClain had hi s eyes on Surber, but Surber had his eves on th e victory. T he two leaders were running a t suc h a fast pace th at by th e fourth lap th ey had a 15-second cus hio n between th em selves a nd thirdp lace Arn old. McCla in was slow ly gaining o n Su r ber, a n d by th e seventh lap th e two riders were wheel 10 wheel. Several times McClain tr ied to ge t around . Surber, but 'each tim e ' Surber closed th e door on him. By th e fin al lap th ey were half-a-lap ahead o f th ird pl ace. which was now being held by Pipes. Then, on a tight righthander after a sma ll drop-off, McClai n tri ed stu ffi n g his Yamaha under th e Yamaha o f Surber a nd n icked a tr ee with hi s shoulder. let ring Surber motor away with the second moto victory a nd th e overall. McClain go t back on the tra ck 10 finish second not far behind. Pipes finished with two solid th irds to fin ish th ird overall . Fourth overa ll wa s Co chran. with a fin e ride, fin ish ing 4-6. Ron Dunfee had bad starts in eac h rnoto, but put in impressiv e drives eac h time with a 6-5 for fifth overa ll. In 250cc Pro actio n , Todd Peterso n put together a 1-2 ride to rack up hi s 125th ca reer Ascot night motocross victory. In the first mo to Rutherford (Kaw) holeshot orr the starting line. followed by Turner a n d Tron e. Rutherford bu ilt up a lea d ov er Turn er as Trone fell back to fifth p lace, leaving Chris H einrich (Kaw ) a nd Kenny Clifton (Suz) to dive for third p lace. Clifton charg ed aft er H einrich th e ent ire moto, but H einrich wou ldn 't give ·i n . Fisher 's stif fest o p pos itio n ca me in th e first 250cc P ro m ot o when he o vercame a bad sta rt and spe nt th e first o f th e 12-lap race tra cking down a nd ca tchi ng Ti Swartz (Ya m) wh o wa s leading. Once dropped to second, Sw artz staye d th ere. a n d co ntin ued to h old th e sa me po sition behind Fisher throughout th e entire seocnd race. The 500cc Pros wer e run with the 125cc Pros, a nd in that outing Doug Dubach (Ka w) rode impressiv ely to th e I 25cc win an d bea t Fisher out for th e overall top placing in the second moto . However . since th ey were paid separately by class, Fisher had no in centive to ca tch Du bach , who h e had beat en easily in round one. Th e widest sp read o f points for victo ry came in th e 250cc Int ermedia te class wh en Loren Pochi rowski (H on) finish ed thi rd eac h moto and still pu lled down th e overalllIt was one of those rare times when fir st and second in eac h moto h ad terribl e tim es in th eir o the r o u tings. Daniel Dava los (Suz) wa s seco n d with a sco re o f 4-6! Eri ck Sec res t (Hon) wa s third for th e day.
