AMA 0-37 Rare Scrambles T he front runner s had to dodge th e stragglers from th e Novice/ Begi n ner sta rt for much of th e seco nd loo p , whi ch made th e going tough in places. " My biggest problem was .pa ssing th e Beginners on th e seco n d loop," sa id Hunn icutt. And o ff th e sta rt th ere were a lot o f pl ay rid ers o n th e co urse - I n early h it o ne o f th em ." My o n ly problem wa s th e pipe co m ing off - it was so loud I ca n 't hear a thing. " Seco n d -p lace Hunn icutt , o n a Yamaha , fini shed with no clutch . "The clutch went o u r -o n th e first loop - it wa s sli p p in g real bad. But a part from th at , a nd a ll th e pl a y riders go ing th e wrong way o n th e co urse, it wa s grea t," he sa id. " It was a 250cc co u rse - reall y tight, a n d that's wh at I lik e." Cr andall thundered home in third at th e en d o f a typ ically flam boy ant rid e. " It was a fu n co u rse with so me good idea s," sa id Crandall. " Bu t it needed a whole lot more ribbon and arro ws. The bomb wa s fun because yo u get to p ra cti ce and you know wh ere yo u want to go but th e co u rse go t hard to find furth er out. You 'd co me over a hill a nd th ere would be no ribbon at all. It tak es time wh en it's lik e that." Derrick Pai em ent fin ished fourth overa ll , despite recent back injuries from th e Invad ers' race. Pai em ent sa id he was using th is race to tun e up for the upcoming Baj a 500. Mik e Fit zgerald (Yam) was first Vet finish er , a nd fifth overa ll. " It wa s a real fast co urse ," h e said. " At th e spee ds th e bikes ar e ca pa ble of out th ere th ey didn 't gi ve yo u enough wa rn ings. You co u ld get reall y mov- in g a nd turn s wit h big bumps would co me u p and yo u co u ld reall y ea r it ." Brad Eyre took the h onors in th e Amat eur Class, fini shing seventh overa ll , wi th Dick Postma (H us) finishing first in th e Sen ior class. Th ere wa s a neck-and-neck battle th e wh ole race in th e Women 's class, wi th J oanna Brownell tak in g the h ono rs in th e Ex pert class, an d Rosa Rall.ath wins Los .Coyotes By Anne C rawford and Tom Van Beveren RED MO UNTAIN, CA, MAY 12 Eric H allga th ran away from the field to win the Los Coyotes M.C. Hare Scrambles in the Searles Station/Teagle Wash area. H u sq varn a- mou n ted Hallgath led the 71 mile race from start to finish . opening up a three-minute lead over second-place Ted Hunnicutt at the checkered flag. 16 " Tigh t a nd chall en ging" wa s th e way everyone described th e race, whi ch is th e fir st course laid o u t by Los Coyotes M.e. in two years . The course was also appreciated by the specta tors because it ran through camp in th e middle of th e loop as well as at th e end. As first Novice finish er J eff Bouchillon put it, "It made it nice to come by th e pits twi ce - m y wife and kid co me out all th e time and norm all y th ey don 't get to see me a t a ll. This was a great idea. " There was a low turnout for th e race, with 321 riders instead of th e recent 450 to 500 rider entry. Los Coyot es a ttr ibu ted th is to a co m bina tion of th e Virginia City Grand Prix, Saturday night 's supercross a t th e Lo s Ange les Coliseum, and Mother's Day. Los Coyotes M.e. helped make Mother's Da y spec ia l byofferin g free entries to all mothers. In contrast to most o f the races in the a rea, the co urse started north of th e railway tra cks, with th e bomb run heading n orth tow ards th e to wn o f T ro na. Hallgath looked im p ressive right off th e sta rt, ope n in g up a 30-second lead by th e end of th e bomb run. Hunnicutt wa s running seco nd at the bomb, with Eddi e Ogden hard o n his heel s in third. O gd en's cha lle nge was cu t short a few mil es lat er o n by a high-speed get-off in th e roc ks which resulted in a n injured foot and a DNF for the day . The Ogden famil y h as been plagued by in juries lat el y, with So. Cal's Ed O gd en Sr. breaking hi s co lla rbone at the Vikings M.e. H are a nd Hound held two week s previous ly. . Chris Crandall's rid e ran true to form, with h is four-stroke ATK slightl y beh ind th e leaders in 12th place at the bomb, but a lready starting a powerful drive to pi ck off th e front runners o ne- by-o ne . The top 10 ill th e bomb a lso included three rid ers fro m th e very co m pe titive Vet s class Mike Fitz gerald, Wayne Ca rlton an d Steve Spragle, all on 250s. "It was a 250("c co ur se," sa id H allga th. " T h e wh ol e tra ck was tight th at was tight if I' ve ever seen it. I wish Ashcra ft (Dan Ash craft - Tea m Husky) had been here. I think I co u ld hav e beaten h im o n this co urse." Hall gath h ad in creased his lead to a full m inute by th e ra il ro ad crossing h alfwa y through th e first loop, a nd was off on th e seco nd hal f o f th e loop before th e Novice/Beginner sta rt got underwa y. The lead ers were well sp read o u t by th e time they hit pit ro w, wi th Hunnicutt's dust still off in th e di stan ce on th e Los Coyot es downhill as Hall gath went thro ugh home chec k. Cr andall stormed through in third , with Amateu r Brad Eyre (KTM) in fourth. Taylor, wh o was bumped up to Amateur th e da y before th e race, hard on her heels. " It was fun ," sa id Brownell , " Bu t th ere was so me guy com ing th e wrong way on th e fir st loop and I had a h ead- on wi th him." Rosa Ta ylor wa s o ne of th e m any rid ers wh o co m p la ined a bo u t a lot of du st. " I didn't see daylight until th e second loop," she said. First Novice fini sher a nd 87th overall was J eff Bou chillon , riding for Dick Alle n Honda. Bouchillon said h e thought th e co u rse was "kind of short" and a little rough. Vet Mike Myers took seco nd overa ll in th e Novi ce class, a nd wa s foll ow ed in by St eve Kirk on a Yamaha. " I lik e rocks a nd I lik e sand - but I don 't like th em togeth er," said Kirk . Th e Beginner class wa s a runaway victory for Mark Pippert (Yam), making it hi s fifth class win in a ro w. " I had a g reat race," said Pippert . " It wa sn 't too du sty for m e because I was ahead o f th e rest of th e guys. This is m y first year of desert ra cing and I've had five wins. It 's gr eat .
