Cooper wo n both 250cc Ex pert mo tos, a nd Steve Bayless overca me a first- mo ta mudbath and a th ree-w ay tie to tak e th e top honors in Open Expe rt . Cooper gra bbed the h ol esh ot in th e first mota over Yamaha-mounted Ron Hendryx, H onda pilot Mik e H ammer and Gen e Hendryx o n another Yamaha. Cooper stea dily pulled away from Ron, whi le H ammer held Gen e in fou rth for severa l laps. A mistak e la te in th e m ot a cos t H ammer th ird. Cooper won by a huge ma rg in over Ron an d G en e H endryx. T he h ol esh ot in mota two also belonged to Cooper, wi th Ron H endryx a nd H on da-mounted J eff H einke in to w. Hendryx tried to keep Cooper in sig h t but fell on lap three a nd let H einke tak e over second. H endryx remo unted and passed Heinke within two laps, then Gene Hendryx dro p ped th e H onda pilot to fourth. Cooper had a 20-seco nd lead over Ron at th e checkered; Ron and Gen e H endryx aga in finished second and th ird for second and third over all , respectively. Greg Brown nabbed th e lead in th e first Open Expert moto over Hondamounted Bayless a nd YZ-mounted J im Thomas. Bayless hounded Brown for two laps th en slipped past th e M-Star pilot for th e lead . Brown lat ch ed onto Bayless for aw h ile, but the Honda rid er began to stretch his lead a t m id-rn ot o rBrow n got a second seaso n here. Befor e th en , the new Lak ewood motocross park had been used o n ly for last Aug ust's AMA National MX. Ja son Wright (Kaw) was seco nd for the day; JP. T h ibodeau (Kaw) was third. In mota one , Diehl gra bbed the hol esh ot ahea d of Wright a nd Thibo dea u, but Thibodeau took the lead in turn two. Diehl retook th e lead on lap two, while Thibodeau and Wright raced side-by-side down every strai gh t for th e next three circ u its. Thibodeau wou ld always close the door on Wright in th e turns, but on lap four he went up a steep ju mp in too high of a gear a nd sta lled. Wr ight shot past and took ou t after Diehl, but he wa s longgone. Diehl won easily over Wright a nd Thibodeau. In ro u nd two, Wright pulled the long uphill start ahead of Thibodeau while Diehl had looped it out o f the starting gate a n d was down. Again , Thibodeau sn uck underneath in the seco nd turn to take the lead. While Wright dogged Thibodeau for the next th ree.laps, Diehl was rapidl y on the mov e. By mid-moto, Diehl had made up the defici t , then passed both the leaders o n the same straight. From th ere h e pulled aw ay, a n d Wright finall y got around Thibodeau on the last lap to finish second again . J im Anderson a lso had a perfect I-I day in the Vet Novice class .
