Moran 's (ST P/ Ar a i/Oakley/KalC ard/Knotty Idea's/Cirello Racing G odden ) races were n othing short of sensa tio na l from the 6O-yard lin e in . H andicap racing . His lightn in g-fast mov es o n th e ins ide and th e outside a s h e charg ed through th e pack had th e cro wd roaring a ll night long. In hi s sem i he p assed Pat Cain for a th rilling victory th at set the sta ge for one of the most exciting m ain even ts in southern Californ ia thus far in 1985. Ca in, m aking hi s first ever appeara nce in Division One, sta rted o n th e 10 a nd was off like a sho t a t th e sta n . Moran began hi s pa tented charge fro m th e 60 an d wa s in fo un h spot by th e en d of lap one. H e th en seemed to be mired in th at spot until lap four w he n h e a nd Steve Lu cero blew past David H ancock for seco nd an d thi rd . Ca in sti ll had a huge lead but w ith the crowd on th eir feet , Moran a nd Lucero pulled up to hi s rear fender as they charged down th e back chu te on th e fin al lap. Moran was first by turn three, th en Lucero got th rough as th ey blasted under th e checke red. Moran took first, with Lucero seco nd, but it m ay hav e been Cain who won th e most o vera ll as he proved h e co u ld run w ith th e big boys. Com ing into th e ni gh t' s ac tion, Christian had only tak en one main event in 1985, and th at was last Fri da y at Costa Mesa. After h is sem i Su nday , he wa s clearly th e favorite to mak e it two in a row a nd th at is exactl y wh at th e " C razy One" did. S tar ting on th e pole, Christ ian (STP/ V a I vol i ne / C ha m p i o n / C i re 110 Ra cin g/Hi-P oint/PB IIK&N /Bel ll Fibergl a ss Concepts GM ) took th e lead from th e gate over Lucero, Dave DeT emple a nd " Sh ow time" Bob Ott. Pf etzingwas th e leader a t th e sta rt a nd was being h ounded by two of h is best friends, Shawn McConnel a nd J ohn Foster. J ohn Sa ndona, r iding h is us ual spectacular style on the o utside, took Foster fo r thi rd before the en d of th e first ci rcu it but th at 's as far as h e co u ld ge t. Pfeu in g guarded th e pole w hi le McConnell tr ied to get th ro u gh o n the o u tside a ll th e way . Hi s a ttem p ts went for naught as Pfetzing was clearl y o n h is game and took th e win with a raised fist as h e raced by th e J erry Kin g checkered flag . Don Butler (J &M Trophy and Silk Scre en /Mike Su ll iva n Racing Associa tes/Scott G oggl es/Dick 's G a rage/ Wild West Mu sic Weslak e) bum ped lea der O scar Salinas ou t of th e wa y in th e Iirst turn a n d went on to win th e Second Division ma in. Randy Beddow, w ho was a lso p art o f th e turno ne bumping incide nt, ca me o u t of it in second and ga ve Butler immedi at e pursuit. Beddow chased th e yellowa nd-red -lea thered Butler a ll th e wa y but wa s unable to get by a n d had to sett le for second, with Jimmy O 'D ell third. The win was Butler 's second of th e year a t Costa Mesa. Tim G ewecke (Justi ce Brothers/ F.O.M.!Mon & Dad) took h is lead from a stu bbo rn Kelcey Gordon on th e fin al lap to post th e vic to ry in th e Junior main. APR. 25 Another huge crowd of over 7000 fans jammed th e sta nds of the Orange County Fairgrounds and watched as Alan " Cra zy" For the second time in 24 hours, Bobby " Booga loo" Schwanz defeated " Flyin" Mik e Faria to win th e Scratch main event at Results Christi an turned back a ll of the challen gers to win hi s first Scra tch main of th e 1985 season whi le Roben Pfetzin g did lik ew ise on th e H andicap side. It was a hard-fought bailie in th e first co rner of th e m ain with Christi an (ST P / Va lvo line/ C ha m p io n / Cirello Racing/Hi-Poin LlPBIIK&N/ Bell /Fiberglass Concepts GM ) and Bobby Schwartz fighting for th e top spot wh ile Mik e Cu ro so an d Kelly Moran were banging on each other for third.
