Even th ough Arnold a nd "Lewis tr ied th eir best ro.rrip h im up, Brown prevailed with a 2- 1 victory. Kick ing off moto one, Arn old bla sted down th e long start i ng stra ig h t to clear th e hill first with Brown right o n hi s tail , and Lewis and Denn y Stephenson foll owing closel y. Pa st the back ble achers a nd through th e swi tch backs, Honda-mounted Brown motored on by to claim fir st pl a ce. But Lewi s stuc k hi s bike right o n Brown's back fender, a nd the two of them sta rte d to pu ll away from the rest of the field . St ephenson managed to get around Arnold for third, a fter some hard dicing. Durin g th e third a n d fourth laps, Brown a nd Lewis enga ged in a real bar-to-bar dogfight. On th e fifth lap, Brown was chargin g hard when _ he dumped hi s H onda oyer th e fini shline tabl etop in a bad crash, h anding a big lead to Lewis, who made th e m o st o f it an d rode on to an easy victory. Brown recovered to fini sh second. Button brought hi s H onda in third overall, co m fo rta bly a he ad of fourth pl ace Stephenson . In moto two Brown had th e track dial ed in as h e got th e holeshot. Stephenson a nd Lewi s were chasing close behind him a nd th e three rid ers sta rted building a lead on th e rest of th e field. A little further ba ck , a wild battle for fourth pl ace was being waged by Lonnie Faulkner a nd Kerry Mu lligan. Through the fourth lap, Brown was still in front, although Stephenson was giving him all he could handl e. Lewis was hovering just behind the two leaders waiting to make his m ove, when Stephenson wa shed out and went down by th e ba ck bl ea ch ers a nd Lewis ran into him. Faulkner was still riding hard in fourth and Button had worked his wa y in front of Mulligan. for fifth. But this was Brown's race , and th ough Lewis worked h is wa y up to chal- lenge on the last lap, Brown was wired for th e victor" . In the 250cc round, Kyle bested Boo Stichter (Kaw) and Jim Mitch ell (H on) : Dav e New ell (Ka w) an d Br Bolton (Yam) foll ow ed Kyle ad across th e finish line in th e Open Pros. Kyle is th e 1984 Sl at e O pen Pro Champion: hi s performance was a good da y's work for a ny body, co ns idering he's a lm ost 30-yea rs-o ld. In th e Open cl ass, Kyle had littl e diffi culty. In moto one, hi s key cha llen ger Newell gated mid-pack . Kyle immediately open ed up a five-second cu sh ion , whil e New ell was cha rg in g through traffic and leaped p ast two rid ers o n th e tow er jump to gain seco n d within half a lap. Kyle even tuall y stretch ed o u t a 30 second lead by the checkers, with N ewell holding a co m fortable marg in o ver th ird place fini sher Bolton.
