AP R . 7 After teaching a motocross school the day before, Mike Boston showed his students and hi s competition wha t he knew 40 • by clobbering th e 125cc a nd 250cc Ex pert classes a t Ch apman 's Race Pl ace. In th e 125cc Experts , J ack Lambert took the hol eshot o n ly to ru n off th e track a few tu rns lat er, giv ing J eff Sch u macher the lead. Boston' ran seco nd for o n ly o ne lap before moving pas t Sch u macher o n the fro nt doubles. Boston the n p ull ed a way unt il he held a comfortable lead a nd cru ised in for th e chec kered. Wh ile Sc h u mache r ra n a lonel y seco n d, Lambert and Steve Hendricks were in a hot battl e for third. Hendrick s fought hi s wa y pastLambert , a lmos t catch ing Sch u mac her a t th e finish . In mot a two Schuma cher. Lambert a nd Hendricks. were o u t front , but Boston was rea lly flying, however, and he quickly pi cked off Hen dricks and Lambert. Bosto n th en zeroed in on Schumacher. Schumacher desperatel y tried 'to hold back th e Kaw asaki pilot, but to no a vail. Boston screamed past on the thi rd lap a nd headed home for the win. Boston commented aft er the races, " I've been doing some p ipe. testing for PSI. We came up with a setup that rea lly works. I enjoyed all the good competition today. I was happy to win against so many fast guys." J erry Lormis too k 'the start of the 250cc Jun iors, but Mark Cro ugh found an opening for the lead , held it for a lap the n crashed in a sweeper. . Lormis rode past to tak e the win, with Richi e Blackmore taki ng second. Crough recovered for th ird. In mota two Blackmore put his Suz u ki in to the lead , whi le Cro ugh cruised in second. O n the seco nd lap Crough made his move, slamming past in a sweeper in the back section to tak e the lead a nd the win. Crough expl ained hi s stra tegy: " I was h opi ng th at if I wa it ed a while to pass Blackmore that we wouldget far eno ug h in front that Lormis co u ld not ca tch either of us. Lormis had to get a third or wor se for me to ge t the overa ll win." Apparentl y, C rou gh 's st ra teg y wo rked. Lorrnis fin ish ed fourt h, givin g the low poi nts scor e to Croug h. Brent Arms trong, o ne o f Boston 's mo tocross school st udents, was looking very fast a na sty lish as he co ntroll ed both rnotos of the I25cc Novi ce class . Steve Brack a nd Eri k Ko hl h ad a big battle over second. bu t Brack edged ou t Kohl to take th e run neru p posit ion. Larry Perk in s put hi s KTM in the lead positi on in the O ver 30 class a fter Ri chard Basinger found h im self o n th e ground in the first turn . Kawasak i rider Craig Canoy got off to a hot start with th e start of the first 125cc Pro moto while series class leader Bo bby Moore (Suz) met with disaster when his cha in guide fell off, derailing h is cha in. Tyson Vohland took over the lea d after passing Canoy, the n new Pro J eff Matiasevich -likewise passed Canoy over the whoops. Bu t Matiasevich fell on a tu rn and gave second p lace .back to Canoy. Moving up to th ird was Billy Fran k, wh ile Matiasevich remou nted and contin ued in fourth. Larry Brooks then passed Matiasevich through a rough stretch a nd advanced to th ird, .bu t tha t was as fa r as he got. In th e fin al laps, Frank fad ed and was passe d by Bro ok s a nd Matiasevich. At the finish it was Vohland, Ca noy, Bro oks an d Ma tia sevich. At the start of th e second ro u nd , Vo hl and got a ba d brea k when he fell in th e second turn . Robert La ugh lin then held the lead over Drey Dircks a nd Greg Vow ell , But Dircks soon cleared past Laughlin on the fin ish s tre tc h to tak e th e lead. Beh in d Laughlin. Frank and Bro wn ~ere di cing in third and fourth. Bro w n waited for Frank to tir e; wh en Frank di d, Brown ' m ov ed up to third. Laughlin eventua lly dropped back to fifth , ma king th e race a Dircks-versu sBrown co n test. Brown go t th e upper ha nd on a n u phill j u m p to tak e o ver the lead a nd th e win . Dircks was sec o n d o ver Frank. 'Bro o ks a n d La ugh lin. . Bro wn won th e overa ll wi th a 6-1 ta lly, wh ich o rdi na rily would n ot have been good eno u gh under most ci rcu msta nces. A 3-4 ga ve Brooks seco nd , a nd Frank was th ird with a 5-3 ride. Bik e trouble p lagued severa l riders in th e 250cc Pro first moto. Scott Manning pushed his bike whi le Micky Dymond had clutch troubl e wi th h is Husky. T he moto win went to Brian Myersco ug h after he passed Jeff Hicks; Greg Zitterkopf p laced thi rd wi th T yson Voh la nd in fourt h p lace . Hicks was th e leader in th e final rou nd over R uss Wageman . Wageman passed Hicks, bu t fell soon after that. Voh land wa s on the gas and soon passed both of th e lea ders for firs t. Brooks was the runnerup over Hicks, Dymond and Myerscough . Voh land 's 4-1score earned him top money, whi le a 2-3 ta lly gave H icks second over Myerscough 's 1-5. Scott Man nin g took th e prize in th e 500cc Pro class with a 1-2 ta lly. Mann in g. J im Ellis and Ed Arnet were th e front -runners in the firs t ro un d. The fin al mot o proved more exciting, how ever. Ron Turner (Ca g) took th e h ol eshot but co u ldn' t ha ng o n to it: Arnet th en took over, bu t soon crashed. Manning a nd Zitterkopf rod e on to hold first and second unti l Manning broke his shock a nd Zitterkopf ws presented with thewin. Taking the top money was Ma nning over Zinerkopf, Ellis a nd Arnet. Cli nt Carlton p u t on a di spl a y of hi gh-flyin g raci ng in the Mini classes, goi ng over th e jumps a nd whoops fu ll bore. Ca rlton had to sett le for second as hard-ch arging Eddie Dickerson beat him to th e finish line, followed by Joe Portman , G len Boo lls and Troy Markham . . Jerr y Schwartz a nd Mike Spiva ha d a battle ro yale in the Over 30 class . Both riders pa ssed back and fort h every la p unti l Spiva deci ded to 'do uble-j u m p the two big jumps an d co u ld not tu rn left 10 feet in the air for the foll owin g left turn . Hard-c h arging Den n i s Cla r k showed the 125cc Begin ner class ho w it's done, fo llowed by Eric Buchanan ' an d Ji m m y Mason. T he I25cc Novi ces saw J ohn n y Wise lead R ick Meyers, a nd Richard Reeves to the checkered flag.
