T ed T a ylor (Rtx ) was th ird. After a restart , Freitas, Athert on and Hill led th e pack of Juniors in the ma in event. Athert on co u ld ge t up a lo ng side Freitas o n the stra ig h taw ays, but it too k five o f th e 12 la p s, before Atherton co uld get a wh eel undern eath a nd gr ab the lead. T hen , in tu rn two ; Frei tas went by Ath er- : to n , a nd Athert on bobbled , a llowin g H ill to also pass. At th e start of la p seven , H ill passed Freitas . For th e nex t four laps, th e top th ree riders di ce fiercely, o ften ti mes goi ng into the tu rns thre e abreast; eac h rider took hi s turn leading as they pu lled away fro m fourth-place rider Cannon. H ill had been rid ing with a bad cl u tch , mid near the end of th e ra ce, bega n slowing with cl u tch problems; he finished 10th . T hat left Freitas an d Ath erton to duel it o ut for th e win. It looked like Fre itas migh t win hi s fo urth straigh t National , bu t Ath erton used h is Wood-R otax horsepow er to tak e th e win by a wheel in a d rag race to the che ckers . Sho bert was still runn ing in third ahead o f Chandl er , Sp ri ngsteen, Poovey, Carr and Ma itland. J ones) tri ed to get a ro u nd Ch and ler on th e o u tside. The ga m ble cost h im , as Sp ringer was abl e to get u nder Poov ey for fifth p lace. A lap la ter , Filice regained the lead wi th a turn -th ree pass. Fi lice th en bobbled eno ug h for Boody to pa ss, but Shobert co uldn 't close th e gap an y mo re from his th ird p lace. Filice quickly reg ained hi s com posure a n d took the poin t position from Bo od y o nce aga in - th en Bood y passed half-lap la ter. It was Fi lice's turn to lead another half-lap into the race, as he passed Boody. Sp ringsteen a nd Poovey drafted thei r way past Cha ndler to land the fourth a nd fift h slo ts. On the 15th la p , Filice's Ha rley quit. It ap parently bro ke a va lve in the front cylinder. T his left Bood y a lone in fro nt , with no o ne to dra ft wit h to keep ahead of Shobert and hi s high-ou tp ut H onda RS750. The order read Boody, Shobert, Springsteen , Poovey, C ha nd ler, a nd a distance . back , Ma it land and Ca rr. J orgensen a lso re tired o n the 16th lap . T h ings began to happen as Springsteen passed Shobert exit in g turn four, o n ly to be repassed a t th e en d o f the stra ig h t. Nea r lap 19, Sho bert o verca me a· large d isadvan tage a bo u t eigh t bikelen g th s - to ca tc h and ,pass Bood y on the back stre tch. H e got a bett er drive o ff tu rn two a n d sim p ly drov e by Boody. C ha ndler began to slow and dropped ba ck to run a lo ne in fifth. A half-la p a fter ta kin g the lead , Shobe rt was dropped to th ird. Shobert mainta in ed a com fort a ble (by m ile racing standards) lead to th e checkered flag , whi le the dash to the Ilag behin d h im was intense. " We set a pretty good pace, a nd I tho ugh t there wo u ld be no problem. being in th e lead a t th e end . T hen hi s ma lar brok e a nd I wa s o u t there by myself. It was ge tt ing ncar the end of the race. My mu ffle r was ma de o u t o f th e wro n g ma ter ia l a nd it brok e o ff, so the power o n th e bik e went down a li tt le bit. Bub ba ca ug h t up to me and passed me, a nd I guess I tri eda Jitrl e.too. hardarrd en ded up losin g the draft for the finisb, so I sq ueeked by in second." Sho bert sai d, " I was ma king a few mistak es a nd wa sn 't tak in g the right lin e com ing o u t of turn four. It took me lo nger th an it should have to figure out.tha t I wasn' t rid in g th e ri ght lin e. I fig ured it out and things started com in g togethe r and it worked rea l well .
