Peterson tops CMC Ascot night MX opener By larry Cravens GARDENA, CA, APR. 5 Todd Peterson displayed his talents at Ascot Park by topp ing the 250cc and Open Pro classes at the Continental Moto- 34 spon Club's o pe n ing round o f their 1985 night mot ocross season. Peterson scored his wins with ba ck-to-back victories o ver W ill iam Surra tt (H o n) in th e.250s an d Pete Murr a y (M-S ) i n th e Open class. In th e first 250cc P ro rn oto Peterson (Hon) got th e hol eshot, foll owed by Surratt a nd Mik e Fed o row (Kaw) . Peterson was untouchable as he rode arou nd th e stadi u m- type track ; Sur-: ra tt was o n th e gas, but co u ld no t ca tch u p. In th e Open Pro "class -first rnoto, Peterson got th e holeshot a nd quickly p ulled a sizea ble lead o ver Mu rray a n d Turner. Turner passed Murray o n th e seco nd lap a n d went after Peterson. but Peterson wa s on th e gas, and gave Turner no chance to ca tch him. Peterson go t th e checkers fir st , foll owed by Turner and Murray . . In the seco nd mota Peterson again pulled a way a n d took a n ea rly lead o ver Shawn T racy an d Gary Jones. Turner wa s out tem porarily on th e first lap when his rear sprocket got wr apped up with wire. On the second la p Jones an d Murray passed Tra cy to take o verseco nd a nd third, respectivel y. The order remained the same as Peterson once agai n took the checkers for th e Open Pro overall win , fol lo wed by Jones and Murray. In the fir st 125cc Pro moto, Jeff Matiasevich (Kaw) got th e holeshot ov er Tim Rutherford (Ka w) and Kenny Clifton (Suz ). As th e three front-runners began 10 pull away , th e real ra ce was back in mid-pack. Surratt and Turner were di cing their way up from a mid-pack sta rt to finish fourth a nd fifth respectively. Matiase vich was fir st . followed by Ruther. ford and Clifton. In th e second rnoto Surra tt got th e d rop o n th e pa ck , fo ll o wed by Matiasevich and Rutherford. On th e first lap Matiasevich p assed Surratt, but th e H onda rider d id n 't fall off th e pace. Surratt tried every tr ick in th e book 10 pass Matias evi ch, but was shut o u t in every turu . Matias evich was first across th e finish line. with Surra II secon d a n d Rutherford third. In the firs t 250cc Intermedi at e moto , Ken n y Maddux (Yam) sm o ked off th e line ahead o f Tom Watanabe (Yam ) a nd J im Huziar (Ka w ). Steve West (Ya m) got a fourth pl ace start, th en quickl y moved into third to chase after Watanabe. Kiedrowski got a fourth place stan, and by th e third lap had worked h is way into first place ahead of Capt, Steve MacSaling, and Mabery. The order stayed the sam e exce p t that Mabery passed MacSaling to tak e over third place. When th e ch eckered flag ca me out, Kiedrowski was first , followed by Capt a nd Mabery. Mark Mangold (Han) . ao Kell aces 125 Pros at CRC Sunrise Motocross By larry C ravens ADELANTO , CA , MAR. 31 Mike KeB (Kaw) beat out John Ray (Hon) and Chris Heinrich (Kaw) to win the l25cc Pro class at this week's California Racing Club (CRC) motocross at Sunrise Cycle Park. In the first rnoto Ray got the holesho t, and took the early lead over Robert Barnum (Suz) and Kell. On the first lap Kell worked his way past second-placer Barnum, who quickly faded o u t o f the top five. H einrich got a sixth place start, but quickly moved into fourth place behind third place Trey Mc Farland. Kell could not gain a n y ground on Ray , while Heinrich moved into third place after working his way past Mc Farland. Ray took th e win ah ea d of Kell and Heinrich. In th e second moto Ray again got the hol eshot, follow.ed b y Robert (Suz ) and Ri ck Truchinski (Hon ). Kell was in fourth, foll owed by Farland an d H einrich. By th e third lap Kell moved into seco nd place a nd H einrich had moved into third place behind Kell. On lap five there was a three-man rac e lea d by Ray, Kell a nd H einrich, th en Kell past john Rayon lap seven to tak e o ver th e lead. Hardchargin g H einrich go t p ast R ay on th e eigh th lap in pursuit of fir st place Kell as R ay started fallin g off th e pace. On th e last lap, Kell a nd H einrich th en diced side-by-side around th e whooped o u t track. H einrich tri ed every. tri ck in th e book to pass Kell, but Kell kept sh utti ng the do or in every tu rn. When Kell took the checkers, H einrich was no m or e than a bik e len gth behind . Huskey bags Bagdad.100 By Tom Kash MURPHY, m, MAR. 31 Daniel Huskey proved to everybody that he is in total control of the sandwashes and sagebrush by winning the 10th annual Bagdad 100, put on by the R aiders M.C. of Boise. Finishing second overall in the rugged cross-country event was brother Joel Huskey (Suz) . It wa s a su n n y d ay an d a little breezy, wh ich gave riders perfect conditi ons to a ttac k th e co urse. Daniel Huskey was clocked on th e flats at 75 mph o n his Suzuki RM250. PUlling out a rid e lik e this wa s good enough to give Huskey n ot only the overall honors, but top 250cc Expert as well. Joel Huskey 's second overall al so made him first Open Expert. ' Winner of the Women 's class was Melva L ees; first Min i was Brian Van ce.
