The CMC's new 1.85 m ile-lo ng race trac k is loca ted in the Q ua il Va llev ar ea o f th e park. Features include a bac kward-fa lling gate, public address system, and overn igh t cam p ing. The opening event bro ug h t ou t o ver 200 riders. Surratt wasted no time gelling hi s Ho nda in fro nt of Oswell in the firs t mo to a nd q uic k ly bui lt up a co m fortabl e lead. Al though both riders broke away from th e res t o f the pa ck earl y, Oswell never th reatened Surratt's lead. Yamaha -mou nted Wyn ne blast ed up from a ninth -pl a ce stan 10 gra b a dista nt third o n la p eig h t of th e 12-lap race, holding o ff a la te ch ar ge by Don Coenling (Ka w). Surra tt took u p h is usu al lead in g ro le wit hi n ha lf a lap as the pair again disappeared from the view o f the o ther riders. It ended the sa me way , with S u rra tt ta king his sizeable lead 10 the checkers. Wynne, who wrestled th ird p lace fro m Pa t Sparks (H a n) ha lfway through th e race, earn ed third overall. Surratt p lan ned on destroying th e 125cc P ro class in much the sa me ma nn er. H e j umped o ff 10 a quick lead with Ka wasa ki's Cr aig Canoy in lOW, but cras hed o n th e ninth lap. ha rd enough to ea rn a DNF for th e day . Wi th the p ressure off, Canoy coa sted home ahead of Do n C oerrling a nd Doug Ge ntry 10 make it Kawasak i one- two -three. Canoy led the seco nd rnot o a ll the way . Fooks got th e lead a nd held h is lin e as Arnet tri ed every move 10 pass but fell short a t th e checkers. Suzuki rider Tony Spear battled from mid-pack in eac h mot o to clinch th e runner-up spot with a 3-2 sco re.
