Ashmead wasted lillie tim e in putting di stance between himself and th e p ack as th e O ntario ri der had a 100-yard lead by th e end of th e first lap. T eam Lockhart, the poin t leader in the series goi ng into the race, began to work their way ro'the fro m after start ing m id -field. Wendell Ph ill i p s was aboard L o ck h a rt ' s Ka wasak i Ninja 900. Phill ip s, ridi ng the wheel s off th e Ninja, caught, passed , and put a la p on the O n ta rio Honda by the end of hour one. Bruce Sass, riding the T eam Spirit Yama ha FJ 1100, also got around On ta rio's Ashmead and began to go after Ph ill ip s.
