T eam Lockhart, the poin t leader in the series goi ng into the race, began to work their way ro'the fro m after start ing m id -field. Wendell Ph ill i p s was aboard L o ck h a rt ' s Ka wasak i Ninja 900. Phill ip s, ridi ng the wheel s off th e Ninja, caught, passed , and put a la p on the O n ta rio Honda by the end of hour one.
