Ward wins another at Corona By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, MAR. 22 Gordon Ward 's long string of victori es in th e 250cc Pro class at Corona Ra ceway was a lm ost broken tonight by Sunwest Ya m aha's Jim Gibson. Gibson passed Ward in th e fin a l turn to tak e th ewin in ' the first mota , th en they both battled in ro u nd two for th e entire mot o unti l Gibson sp u n o u t on th e last la p a nd a llowed Wa rd 10 keep his streak alive. Gibson passed Sharuga o n th e firsi lap as th ey ex ited th e first set o f Pro whoops: th en Ward went by. Ward quickl y h om ed-in o n Gibson , a nd for th e next few laps th ey were just in ches a pa rt, By th e third lap th ey ca ugh t up 10 Intermed iat e class riders o n th e shortened track (a lighting failure in th e hill s restricted raeing to th e infield) an d a co up le o f laps la ter th e traffi c became a bi g p roblem for Gibson. As h e tried to pass a . slower rid er, Gibson was forced o ff th e track but sti ll had th e lead when h e got ba ck o n . Gibson th en blew hi s approach to th e wh oops a n d Ward took the lead. For the rest o f th e ra ce Gibso'n stayed glued to Wa rd's rear fend er, despite a poor-running bike. On the . fina l lap Gibson intensified his a ttac k, and made h is mo ve as th ey approached the finish line. Gibson banzai ed a ju m p and pulled up al ongside Ward in mid-a ir; upon landing h e held th e best line o ver th e ta ble-top turn 10 squirt in to th e lead and ta ke the win by in ches. Sharuga a nd'T urk a lso spent the entire m ot a in close company, and a t th e fini sh it was Turk who came up withthird , " Ward g rabbed th e holesh ot at th e stan of th e seco n d m ot a ahead of Sharu ga an d Gibson. Once aga in Gibson qu ickly ove rtoo k Sh aruga a n d then m oved o n Ward. As Ward a nd G ibson set o ff 10 battl e each other, th ey left Sharuga behind in third to fend o ff Turk , esta blish in g th e same pattern as in m ota o ne . At rnid-moto th e leaders again h it traffic, but thi s time there were no p ro blem s. Turk overlook Sharuga for th ird a n d left him behind. U p fro nt, Gibso n was bar-to-bar with Ward , but co u ldn' t pass. Gibson th en cha rged at th e beg inning o f lap nine, but Ward held him o ff in the first turn . Ward made a slight mistake in th e whoops that a llowed Gibson to get by. but th e situ a tio n didn't last for long as Ward ca me back and p assed Gibson o n th e backstraigh t. Gibson kept th e pressure on h eading into th e final lap, but spun o u t in a turn . a llowing Ward to take th e win.
