Steele, Giger dice at Las Vegas Motocross Park Robb Mesecher finished second in the 250cc AA class at FRA's TInhorn end uro in Lucerne Valley. Scott Sampson took the class w in. 36 '. J acobsen and Mike Chamber lain (Yam) were th e onl y rider s to zero the 33·mi le loop with J acobsen's sco re o f two seco nds bearing Chamberl ain 's by 26 seco nds . Brett Bainbridge (Yam ), la st month 's loo p -o ne winner , took third o vera ll with J amie R ik er (Yam) and Dean Beauchamp making up th e top five. Riker was al so this month 's best finish er for a Beginner . Wa y down in th e resul ts were some real winners. George a nd Lucille Thoma s co m peted in th e Tinhorn, their first-ever en d uro, a nd th ey proved it 's n ot too late to start, Lucille is 65-years-young and her husband George is 64. They said they lov ed every m inute a n d will return to rid e again. Right off the bat loop two had th e riders confused. They rode at 36 mph to th e three-m il e marker , anticipatin g th e check to sh o w up immediately. Then, a ll o f a sudden th e riders wer e in a long specia l test sectio n through tig h t, winding sandwash es a t3 6 mph. The 4.2-m ile test ended at th e tiebreaker chec k poi nt which separa ted th e overa ll winners . Sampson turned in th e best score to this chec k. After a short reset, a sneaky ch eck was ri ght arou nd the corner testing timekeeping sk ills . Looping o u t at 30 mph to Bessimer Mi ne Road th e loo p ca me back to a 12-m p h rock-strewn. wat erfall tra il th at led to th e fourth a nd fin a l chec k poin t. T h e ver y fir st rider to hit a ny part o f th e co u rse was number I Y, Sa m p son . His score of 2.141 was not touch ed by any other rider. Ro bb Mesecher (Kolbe Honda) pushed Sampson with a score of 3.152 for seco nd o vera ll. Fro sty Cactus winner, Mark Wiech mann (Ya m) , posted third o vera ll with Ra nd y P retzer (Ya m) , Webb, Ed Sharp (Hon ), Kurt But ler'(Yam ), T ony Megla (Hon) , H eat h Hibbard (Yam) a nd J o h n E. Hungry Valley hosts CRC's Magic Mountain GP By Terry Rezek H UNGRY VALLEY , CA, MAR. 17 With th e demi se of Indian Dunes, California Racing Cl u b has been forced to move its manv events to which ever area has space in rh e srhedu le o r, as for today's Magi c Mount a in Grand Prix. to an area which doesn 't ye t have a schedule. The Hungry Vall ey Stal e Vehi cular R ecrea tio n Area ha s o ver 18,000 acres o f ridin g ar ea, o f whi ch 1500 ca n be reserved for co m pe titive use. Wha t it doesn ' t h ave is water. At o ne event last year; C RC spe n t $4000 on water w hi ch had to be trucked from Gorman. This yea r th ey were lu cky; the stale let th em use a well o n ly two mil es from th e race si re - provided CRC bought and in stall ed at their ex pe nse th e ne cessary pump and pipes a n d Iurnished th e water truck s! They did just th at a nd th e race was on. All classes were well represented and the Minis were no excep tio n . Expert Shane Trittler sq uirted off th e line and had 20 feel o ver everyone else a fter a hundred ya rds. Gary Brinkmeyer was just barel y ahead of th e o the r Beginners as th e seco nd row took off. About halfwa y a ro u n d . Mike Pascarella had s li p ped his Yam ah a in front of T rirrl er 's. The lead Novice, Bria n Gipson, aded another Yamaha to th e top three. Da ve Ma cFarlane and J ustin Souza had pa ssed Brinkmeyer to lead th e Beginners. The next lap est ablished Pascarella who n ow had a fat lead a nd no cha lle nge: he went o n for an easy win with a 30 second margin . Trittler hung on for seco nd and Gipson stayed wa y up with th e Expert to get the Novi ce win . Souza and Ma cFarlane joined by Mike Da vis in front of th e Beginn ers. Ma cFarlane DNF'd four la p s la ter an d Souza and Davis went o n to to p th e Beginn ers.
