With five laps remaining, Ward ca u tio us ly enjoyed a co m fortable sixsecond lead o ver Johnson w h ich he kept 10 th e fini sh. Once Ward had th e lead, h e started to pu ll away and take co m ma nd. Then J ohnso n stuffed it under Burnworth in a left turn a n d took over th ird; but J ohnson wasn 't quite don e yet - he set after and pa ssed O 'M ara for second . This time. eigh t seconds separated Wa rd a n d J ohnson with five laps 10 go, but J ohnson co u ld n ' t mak e up th e differen ce. At the fini sh. it wa s Wa rd , J ohnson. O ' Mara, Pederso n , H olley, Ha n na h. Myersco ugh (top privateer), Andy Stacy a nd H icks. " I didn' t get h ol esh ots or a nyth in g ," said Ward, " b u t I didn' t ha ve a ny problems gelling arou nd anybod y. l just rode m y ow n race. I co u ld p u ll away a n yt ime I wa n ted 10. H owever. at th e bottom o f th e p receed ing dow nh ill , G lover wen t to th e inside o f the turn , while Bailev went wid e an d.stole th e lead. By the end o f the 10 fir st lap. Gl over h ad already developed a five seco nd lead over Bail ey, wh o was rid ing on th e ragged edge; mak ing many liule mistakes th at let King sta y close. " I was real nervous a n d m y a rms gal real ten se a t th e sta rt ," said Bail ey. " I made so many mi stakes rig h t awa y 1felt like an id io t - 1 felt as th ough I sh ou ld cha nge th e number o ne on my plate." Whil e Kin g wa s pr essuring Ba iley, the T eam Tamm rider suddenly dropped to fourt h and was cl osel y following Li les. The Li les/ Kingduel pi cked up speed , a nd th e two Ka wasak i riders were ri gh t o n Bail ey's rea r fender. A few la ps lat er. Bail ey sta rted to settle down a nd pu ll away from King and Liles. "After a bout five or six laps." sa id Bai ley, " I started gelling things a little bi t better ." Soon a fter, Bail ey sta rte d moving in on Glover , who held a six -second lead. "For a co up le o f la ps," said Ba iley, "I co u ld see Broc in th e same p lace, so 1kn ew 1 wa s maimain ing. T hen I kn ew I co u ld sta rt sea rch ing for a co u p le o f different lines, and 1 fo und so me wh ere 1 co u ld h ook up a bit bett er a nd mis s a few holes. Things just start ed co m in g togeth er ." Ba iley sta rted closing grou nd o n Gl over slow ly. and then the two were handlebar -to-handlebar. Bailey found hi s cha nce a nd made hi s move taking an inside lin e through a sharp right tu rn a nd pass ed G lover. The Nationa l Ch ampion qu ickly j umped 10 a twosecond lead which he held for th e rema ining fo ur laps. Not too far behind Gl over was a d ice ove r th ird bet wee n King a n d Li les, bu t it ca me to an end w hen Liles bailed th rough th e whoop section. " I was ca tch in g Kin g and Gl over, whi le Ba iley was n' t p u lli ng a way ," sai d Lil es. " I figured if 1 pi cked up th e p ace even more. I co u ld get a seco nd or firs t o ut of the m ot a , bu t I got a liule mi s-rirned in th e wh oops, a nd th e fro m wh eel wem betw een o ne of th em and 1 hit th e grou nd pret ty ha rd ." At the finis h it was Bai ley. G lo ver, Kin g , L iles , Ya ma ha ri d er Scott Mannin g , Ph il a nd Mike Larson , G lo ver, and his whi te a nd pin k n ylon pan ts, cap tured the ho lesh ot a t the sta rt of th e seco nd moto a nd fou nd h im self with abou t a fo ur Brae Glover won the 500cc class despite having a broken wrist. In the 250s. Bob Hannah a lso raced w ith a broken w rist and fin ished sixth , second lead by th e end of th e first la p - King , Yama ha ride r Jim Ellis, Honda- pi lot Jo J o Kell er . Mi ke Lar so n , Mannin g and Ba iley foll ow ed, C losely fo llow ing Bai ley was Liles. Glover ex ten ded h is lead a few seconds every lap, w hi le Bailey starte d working hi s wa y up th ro ug h th e p a ck. bu t not very qui ckl y. " I got a ll scre wed up at th e start, " said Ba iley. " I go t sidewa ys off the line and ran into the guy beside m e. I had to gas it thro u gh traffi c, but it wa s so dusty , I didn 't even kn ow where the turns were. I co u ld n ' t get through th ose guys quick enou gh and by th e time I got into seco nd. 1 need ed bi noculars 10 see Broc." Wh en Bailey m oved into second, Gl over had bu ilt up a 21-second advantage th at Ba iley started to ch ip away a t. Atthe same time, Kin g , who was running a very safe th ird . p u lled int o th e mechan ics' area poi nting 10 the swingarm bolt that h ad backed itself out. After h is mec ha ni c pou nded it bac k into p lace, King ma de a nother lap (now in fourth ) befo re ma ki ng anothe r p it sto p where a n ew nut for the bolt wa s wa iti ng, but h e lost two more pos itio ns in th e process. T h is put Li les in to secon d a head of Mann in g , Ea to n and Mike La rso n. As th e mot a ca me to a close, G lo ver sta rt ed 10 coo l it, a llowing Ba iley to gai n a bo ut four seco n ds a lap. Liles fini sh ed third for thi rd overa ll, while Man ni ng too k fourth, After Ma nn in g fo llowed Ea ton, Mik e Larson a nd Kin g. " I j us t wish I had a co u p le o f more la ps," sa id Bail ey a fter it was all over. " Bailey a nd 1 got a bad start," said Li les. " I tr ied to pace wit h h im go ing thro ug h traff ic, bu t I fell over in a slow co rner an d brok e th e fro nt brak e lever. 1 cou ld n ' t stop co m ing down • a ny o f th e hills."
