By Randy Okada Enough is enough . The AMA h as toyed wi th and messed u p our MX and SX series. The first reason was to make it understa n da ble for newcomers. Now we have as much confusion as we have cha m p ions. This is my suggestion to making a series: AMA, use it or hire me a nd I' ll put it into motion. Fo r sta rters, amateur or rookie rid ers can on ly compete in the 125cc series. They must co m pe te in at leas t seven of th e 10 o u tdoor races and seven o f the 12 or 14 su pe rcro ss ra ces to win th e I25cc National Championsh ip. For seasoned pros, th e first five races o f th e outdoor series are 125cc or 500cc. So the season ed pro must make a decision to ride a 12Scc or 500cc for th e first five ra ces. Both 125cc and 500cc shall be producti on o n ly. A rid er co m p etes o n th e sa me size mach ine as h e starts with. (A rid er ca n not ride a 500cc o ne race th en swi tch to a I25cc th e n ext. ) Also , 125s will , for th e first five ra ces, be pro-a m . If he wa nts to, a rider ca n a lso win th e 500cc Nat ional class . T h is series is the fir st five ra ces, p lus points earned a t th e Carlsbad ro und of th e World Cha m pi ons hip, and th e points earned at the Support class a t Unadilla. T he high-p o int man in thi s series will win th e ser ies, but will o n ly be ca lle d th e 500cc Seri es Winner. This way a t th e end of th e sea son th ere will be o n ly th e Grand Na tio na l Cha m pion , th e 125cc Amateur Ch ampion an d SOOcc Ser ies Winner. The Grand Nat ion a l Cha mpionsh ip is wo n bvri din g eithe r a 125ccor 500cc in th e firs t five o u tdoor races, a 250cc (wo rks o r pro du cti on ) in th e next five ou tdoor ra ces, pl usa ll points ea rn ed rid in g a 250cc (works or produ ction ) in the supercross series. Not e: A rid er sha ll be a llow ed to drop o ne of hi s worst fin ishes. So co m bined sco re of bo th o u tdoor a nd indoor mi nus one race eq ual s Grand Na tio na l Ch am p ion. Purses shou ld be a mi n im u m of 20,000 p er race o u tdoor; firs t five races 125cc, 10,000; 500cc 10,000; last five o u tdoor 125cc $5000; 250cc 15,000. Purses fo r supercross sho uld be 10%o f th e gat e, 9%goin g to th e pros and I % going to th e 125cc rooki es. Since we'r e o n th e su bject, th e format for supercross sh ou ld be: 250cc (works or production ), four qualifiers (to p five to main ), two sem is (to p two to main ), one 20-lap ma in event. In I25cc supercross, two qualifiers (to p 12 to ma in ) a nd one 12-lap mai n event. Now you've read it. It will work , so AMA, use itl H ire me: I'm cheap. • • , II 41
