The recent closure o f tw o motocross p arks - Saddleback Park and the popu lar Indian Dunes lo cated near Newhall - resulted in a recreational void for a la rge number of en th u siasts. Th e closure co m po u nd ed a problem whi ch -has exis ted in the high de sert regi on o f California - th e illegal riding o f o ff-roa d vehicles on priva te propert y a n d o n environm entall y-sensitive a reas . T h e Cit y of Lanca ster is proposin g to d evel op a n o ff-road vehicle recreati on pa rk to m eet.most.of the recrea tio na l needs-of the OHV users wfth rn a d efined. sec u re a rea. Th e total a mou n t of fund s to be requested from th e Ca liforn ia OffHighwa y Vehicl e Grant is$I .700.000. T he costs include la nd acq u isi tio n (a p p ro x. 200 a rea s) a t $ 1.2 million a n d site d evel opment a t $500.000 . Sites under co ns idera tion include a 200-acre p a rcel just outside ci ty limits. from th e eastern side o f th e Antelope Valley freew a y (Ca lifo rnia 14) between Avenues F and G . and a seco nd si te to th e east. between 20th a nd 25th S tree ts East Annex ation o f unincorporated property would be involved. The sites m eet a regional cr iteria se t Iorth by the California OffHighwa y Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission in th at within a 150 mile. or three-hour driving time radius. of the City o f Lancaster there resides a potential us er population of over 10 million people. , . Public co m m ent at th e April 17 h earing is need ed o n demand for such a facil it y in the Antelope Valley. as well as to ad d ress potential en vironmental a nd eco no m ic effec ts asso cia ted with th e proj ect. City officials sa id they believe Lancaster ha s a very good cha n ce of qua lifying for the sta te grant because o f the grea t regi onal d em and for offro ad vehicle facilities following th e closure o f tw o m aj or m otorcycl e p arks.
