Brundage led wire-to-wire a fter gra bbing th e hol eshot while Mati asevich starte d slo wly in fifth. After two laps Brundage led Kawasaki -mounted Michael Stahlman with Vin ce Rizzo on a Honda in third. Matiasevich moved pa st Rodney Wa lla ce to tak e fourth a nd started making a move towards Rizzo . On th e next lap. Mariasevich got Rizzo and two laps later blast ed by Stahlma n to ta ke over second p lace. H is progress, howev er , stopped th ere as he cou ldn ' t threat en Brundage. Stahman edged Wall ace for third place and Rizzo wound up fifth. 88 250cc Stock Intermediate The second round of the Matiasevich -Brundage ba tt le got underway .in the 25Occ.S.tock.lruermediatedass. but thi s tim e it wa s Matia sevi ch who ca me out on top. After stea ling the hol eshot, Matiasevich im media telv _ opened a four -second lead over Brun'dag e and th er e wa s noth in g th e Ramon a, Californ ia rid er co u ld do a bo u t it. Matiasevi ch co nt in ued to pull out a second a la p on the field while Brundage didn't have much o f a p ro blem holding on to second pl ace. Two laps later, Brundage worked hi s wa y to sixth and didn ' t sto p th ere. H e proceede d to get Sco tt Chesser a nd by th e last lap had moved up to third pl ace. Matiasevich, h owever , co nt in ued to be th e fast est rider on th e track and coaste d to an easy win. Kalas held on for second wtih Brunda ge fini shing third. 125cc Stock Intermediate Matiasevich didn't cool off as he dominated the l25cc Stock Intermediates. Despite getting off the line in _ .. [jfth .place~ the La Habra Heights. Ca lifornia, rider only needed two laps to surge to the front of the pack. From there it was all down hill as nobody could get close enough to mount a serious challenge. Holeshot and first lap leader Steve Hill kept his Kawa saki in second spot. Minibike 105cc T eam Honda 's Shaun Kalos ran a way a nd hid from the -rest of the pack in th e Minibike 105ccclass. Th e real race wa s th e one for seco nd place. Yamaha-mounted Vin ce DeVane and Rick Simmet on a H onda battled ea rly for th e runner-up spot, but DeVane event ua lly got th e better o f th e ·ba tt le. Meanwhile, Scott Brown was recover in g from an eig h th- p la ce start and was making a serio us cha rge tow ards th e front . DeVane sta rte d clo sing th e gap on Kal os while Brown m oved into fifth pl ace, on ly five seco nds behind Sim me t. Lap four showed DeVan e right o n Kalas with Sim me t being pushed by Brown, but neither DeVan e or Brown cou ld mak e a move a nd th ey fini shed in th at order. Mann started to stretch hi s lead sli ghtly over Brown a nd after two laps led . by 2.5 seco nds . With DeVan e pushin g hard in third pl ace, Brown su ddenl y ca ug h t Mann a nd a three-way battl e ens ued . H alfway thro ug h lap four, DeVane passed both Brown a nd Mann as th e latter began to fade. DeVan e and Bro wn pulled away an d a ll o f a su dde n Mann had hi s hands full with Simmer's H onda. DeVan e coasted in for the win while Brown fin ished a co mfortable second . Simmet bl ew bv Mann as the two fini shed third arid fourth, respectivel y. Brown 's second was a fin e debut for what In n ova tion Sports' president Jim Ca stillo termed "stage one of a 99-pound mini. " The Honda was fitted wi th a uniquely-d esigned frame that featured a carbon-fiber back sectio n. In addition, the familiar rider number/name combinations of the past several seasons weren't the same due to an AMA change in rider numbering for each division.
