CA, MAR 9 Bobby Sch wartz displayed an impeccable form to win the Scra tch main a t th e CocaCola Sp rin g Cl assic a t Lo ng Beach Veteran s Stadium, th e sigh t of the 1985 World Team Cup Fina l, Saturday nigh t. Schwartz's win wasn't enough I gain the overall victory in the three-race Spri ng Classic to series, whi ch went to Mik e Faria. Track conditions were a little rough but tha t didn 't deter the talented Schwartz in hi s quest for victory. As Schwartz lin ed up for th e Scra tch m ain h e was cha lle nged by Sam Errnolenk o and Ri ck Mill er. Lance King, wh o earli er in th e eveni ng qualified for th e m ain , wa s forced to sit it o u t af ter dis loca ting h is h ip a few m inutes ea rli er. Schwart z took th e init ia l lead from th e pole an d im me d ia tel y began to len g th en it o ut. He put on a spectac u lar sho w as h e bounced a ll over hi s bike an d th e tra ck with a devil -m ay-car e style. The crowd went in sane as Erm o len ko closed in on Schwartz. After beating Dennis Briggs through th e first bend, McCasland (Shoei/ Frame Shop / Jones G o ggles/Gene Thurman R aci ng Tsubak i/Kal-Gard Wes) began to o pe n it up. King dropped out after on e lap and was in obvious p ain with his hip problem . Brad Oxley had been running second but was passed on th e final circu it by Ermolenko, who went by on th e outside. Errnolen ko then gav e the huge crowd anoth er thrill wh en he a lm os t went down in turn four but he m ad e a miracu lou s recov ery. The save n ett ed him second beh ind his good friend , th e happy McCa sland. Oxley hung on for th e th ird spo t. Saturday ni ght' s Second Division . main event was by far the most exci ting ra ce of th e year thus far in so u th ern California. Sh ane McDonald was th e initial leader over Ri ch Swea ne y and Warren Reid. Reid got bySweaney at th e en d of la p one and th en became em bro iled in a ro yal battle for second with Pat Hawley. They went at it side -by-sid e until Hawley took over when Reid went wide in turn two on th e fina l go- 'round. By turn three, Reid was back br eathing down Hawley's neck as H awl ey gave McDonald a tap. McDona ld hung on bu t th ey again made contact in turn four. McDonald went down and Reid put it into th e front ch u te fence after takin g evasive action. Hawley cro ssed the line fir st but th ere was obviously a referee's deci sion to be made. He ru led, much to the di spleasu re of th e cro wd (alon g with Reid a nd McDon a ld ) th at H awley (Quicks ilver/Scar Clinic!Antonucci's Piz za/Pa iri s Saw ' Sha rp en in g/ Kin g Neptune Waterbeds/Doffo' s Auto Body /Oak ley Gdn ) was th e winner. J eff Springman fin ished seco nd. wi th Victor Robledo third.
