of Col um bu s, Oh io, to gl ean a litt le mor e low en d and punch . T h e stock eigh t-peta l reed set-u p was repl aced by a Mossbarger 10-petal system. T he n ew set -up has slight ly narro wer reed fingers whi ch work a littl e freer than th e stock o nes . T he res u lt is more snap w he n yo u first open th e th rottl e. The main reaso n for th e car b sw ap is inc reas ed gas m ilea ge; th e stock '84 m od el wou ld only sa fely ma ke 35 mi les on a 3.3ga llon tan k o f fuel. By using th e 38m m ca rb and th e h eavi er thi rd gear clu tch shoes in th e seco n d g ear assembly, T erry is com forta ble with gas stops p laced 40 m iles apa rt . Terry has fitted stra igh t-up h andlebar clamps (w hich co me stock o n th e WR seri es but not o n the AE) a nd shorte ne d the fork tubes by 35m m so th ey clear th e n ew clamps as well as shorten ing th e sp rings by 25mm . T he resu lti ng setup is identical to tha t used o n the W Rs a nd m ak es for better turnin g characteris tics in th e woods tha n th e angled-bac k handleb ar cla m ps th at come sto ck. Terry's prem ise a bo ut turning in th e woods is simple: "If yo u ge t th e fron t en d o f th e bik e as well as yo ur sh oulder s around th e tree, th e rest o f th e bike wi ll fo llow ." H e likes to ge t as far for wa rd as poss ible a nd the ne cla mps mak e it th at much eas ier . Si nce the AE freewheels when the rider backs o f£ th e th ro ttl e, engine braking is virt ua lly nonexistent exce p t at h igh speeds . For th a t reason , ha vin g fu ll braki n g powe r o n ta p at a ll tim es is a necessit y. For m ore dependa ble actio n u p front, T erry mod ified th e double leading shoe se t-up so th e tie rod th a t co n n ects the fro nt a n d rear brak e arms run s above th e ax le rather th an below . As fa r a s tire pressu res go , T erry runs a rela tively lo w 10 psi front and rear; in ro cky ter rain h e mi ght go a s high as 12 up fron t. H e's been kno wn to run p ressu res in th e rear well below 10 p si accordi ng to co n di tio ns. In th e fina l section o f the '84 Black Coal Natio na l in Indi ana (wh ich he won), T erry knew the co ndi tion s would be ver y sli p pe ry an d wet so he dropped the pressure in th e rear to fo ur psi: "Tires are merely a cus h io n," he exp la ins . "Sure th ey do p rovide tractio n , bu t th eir mai n fun ction is to give a 'c u sh' effect, Run n in g h igh er pressur es n ot only sends more o f a shock th ro ugh the bi ke an d wears o ut the rider faster, it a lso leads to m o r e flats; si nce th e tire doesn ' t g ive wh en i t hi ts a sha rp o bjec t, th e tire a nd tube get punctured .
