At th e halfwa y point o f th e 100 mi le-long race, Roesel er had a co m fortable lead. while Ward ha d worked his wa y up to seco nd. Campbell , who had raced th e da y before, sta rted to get in o n th e ac t by taki n g ove r the thi rd position. At the sta rt of the race, Camp bell's bike su ffered a cold seizu re, a nd h e had to wa tch five rows o f riders go by befo re h e co u ld contin ue . About a minute behind Cam p bell fo llowed Ash craft. At this point, Baker cra sh ed, " Ij us t got m y a rm o u t of a cas t last week and i t was sti ll a littl e weak ," sa id Baker. -" I h i t o ne of the mud holes, and si nce I was a littl e bi t tir ed fro m yester day, I got pi tch ed over the ba rs.
