CMC/Skoal Ba ndits Golden State Amateur Nationals: Rou n d eight TItles wrapped up at Lake Mad e r a By Troy Scott Over 500 amateur motocrossers from all over the state were on hand today at Lake Madera, California, for the fi nal round of the Continental Motosport Club/S koal Bandit's G olden Stat e Am ateur Nation als. O n e o f th e top riders of th e series was Kawas aki rider J eff Mat iasevich, who cla imed class cha mpio ns hi ps in both th e 125 a nd 250cc Interm ed iate cl a sses , wh il e H onda rider Eric Marnoch clinch ed th e cha m p io ns h ip i n th e 500cc Int ermedia te class. In th e 125cc Intermedi ate class. Mari asevich took th e cha m p io nsh ip by on ly two points over another Kawa saki rider, Mike Kied rowsk i, 357-355. Toda y. Mari asevi ch cap tured the win in both mo ros , while Kiedrows ki fin is he d second overa ll with a 3-2 sco re. In th e 250s. Mat iasevi ch . again, won both motos. Marn och a lso end ed the series o n a win n ing note by using a 2-1 tally to win the 500cc Intermed iat e class . Early in the race, Belch er moved into th e lead and developed a fo ur second lea d over Matiasevich , wh o had slid into seco n d, Bal d win and Luceste th en engaged in a to ug h duel for third , Luceste tri ed to p ass Bal d w in but go t o u t o f sha pe whe n h e hi t some rough terra in , then he crashed and dro p ped to six th. T his put Kiedro wski into fourth. H owever, Kied ro wski also crashed two tu r ns la ter whe n he we nt into a berm a lit tle too ho t a nd went down ; h e qu ickl y ref ered bu lo st ~ c~ uple of . , po sit ions . At thi s point , th e top three rid er s were Belch er, Ma tia sevich a nd Baldwin . In a ro ugh straigh t. Maria sevich pull ed up a long side of Belcher a nd mad e th e pa ss, netti ng him th e lead. Meanwh ile, Kied ro wski was o n th e m ov e and passed Ka wasa ki r ide r Fra n kie Brundage a nd Bald win o n th e last lap to tak e thi rd in the moto. The seco nd rnoro featured a duel betw een Matiasevich a nd Kied row ski . At th e sta rt, though, it was Mar ia sevich with th e hol esh ot, bu t Baldwin fo llow ed in second. H ow ever, a few turns la ter, Kiedrowski slip ped by Baldwin a nd set after th e leader. Kaw asa ki rider Terry Ba stard a lso found a wa y around Baldwin for th ird, the n th e top th ree Kaw asaki rider s started to pull a way from the rest of th e p ack . Ncar the end o f th e race, Kied ro wski started to pressure Mat ia sevi ch , bu t it wa sn 't close enough to try a nd mak e a pass. T h ird went to Ba sta rd , wh o fini sh ed a head of T y Davis an d Brundage. At th e start of th e fir st 250cc Intermediate m o ta , Marnoch and h is H onda shot into the lead that was o n ly short -lived . O ver a j u m p, Ma rnoch's H onda kicked radi cally to th e side; ca us ing h im to cras h p rett y hard. As h e cras hed. ano ther H onda rider Steve P ia tton i cent erpu nched Mam och , that p ut Piatton i o n the grou nd, also. Neither riders were hurt in th e p ile-u p and th ey both reentered the race. Yamaha rid er Sco tt Myers soon moved int o third a nd set his sight o n the seco nd p lace rid er Sparks. R idin g like a w ildma n, Myers ca ught u p to Sparks and tri ed to mak e a pass. At o ne p oint, Myers slid out and a lmos t lost co ntrol o f th e third posi tion. H ow ever , h e man aged to pi ck u p h is pace agai n a nd reeled in Spa rks. T he two ba nged han d leb ars a few tim es as th e race progressed until Myers finall y found his openi ng a nd passed Sparks. But Myers wasn't done q uite yet - he then started to inc h closer to th e leader Mar ia sevich , bu t when the ch eckered flag appeared, Mar iasevich . managed to hol d o n to a five-seco nd lead over th e flyin g Myers. Sparks took thi rd. wh ile Brundage settled fo r fo urt h . Myer s jumped ou t to the ea rly lead in th e seco n d m oro with H onda ride r Tim Wh itl ock a nd Mat iasevi ch ho t o n his rear fender. Nea r th e end o f th e race, Marn och got a seco nd wind a nd tried to repass Pipes, but co u ld n' t. T h ird went to Wolcott, foll owed by J ack Azevedo (Han) an d Loren Pochro wski (Han ). The second mot a was a ll Marnoch 's - he stole the hol esh ot a nd never looked back.
