Keh oe q ui ck ly go t to h is feet but was o u t for th e n ight. H ardick inher ited second aft er passin g H icks ear lie r. But, H ardi ck cras hed over so me doubl e jumps a n d gav e Hi cks the fin a l tra ns fer spo t o f th e ni gh t. Smi th easily wo n. Finals Once aga in , Lech ien and h is H on da roosted 10 th e fro n t of th e pack a t the start o f the first main wi th j oh nson, Burnworth a nd O ' Ma ra close beh ind. By th e en d o f th e first la p , Lechien had a lrea dy developed a sizeable lead over johnson. O 'M ar a a nd Breker had p assed Burn worth, whi le Wa rd crashe d a nd dro p ped to the back o f th e pac k. A la p lat er, j oh nson bailed over a double jum p a nd a lso fell to th e rear o f th e field . As things sta rted to sett le do wn by th e th ird lap, th e top 10 p o si t ion s we r e L ech ie n , O 'M ara , G lo ver , Brek er , Barn ell , H o lley, Burn worth, Bow en , Storbeck a nd Ped erson. At th e halfwa y poi nt , Lech ien 's lead had grown to abou t five seco nds over G lover, wh o had a lready passed O 'M a ra . With three laps to go, Lechien looked to have th in gs under wraps, but he sudde n ly crashed. "There wa s this big rut," sa id Lech ien, " a nd wh en 1 went through it , roc ks were ge tti ng caugh t in m y brak e and would mak e it stic k. Fo r abou t two la ps 1 didn 't ha ve a nv rear brakes beca use rocks were g eui ng jammed in the re. So , 1 figured I' d better ge t o ut o f th at rut , an d 1 tri ed a differen t lin e a nd clipped a hayba le wh ich th rew me dow n ." Whi le Lechien was tr yi ng to ge t hi s bik e resta rted , G love r motored past a nd took o ver the lead . Lechien recovered in seco nd just a hea d o f O 'M ara, Barnett an d Bow en . Way back in sixt h was H ann ah . G lover didn 't have a ny p robl em s holding o n to ta ke th e wi n. j ohnson a nd Ward man aged to wor k their way up to n i nth an d 13th . Bu rn worth ga ted th e seco nd moro perf ectly a nd wa s rewarded wit h th e h o lesh ot: Lech ien was seco nd ahead o f O 'Mara , Ba rn ett . j ohnson, Whit- in g , Ward , Gl over a nd Breker , H ow ever , durin g th e seco n d lap, Lechien bl ew by Burnworth li ke h e was sta ndi n g sti ll. A few la ps la ter, Lechi en en joyed a co m forta ble lea d followed bv O 'M ara , Barnell, Whitin g , Ward: j ohnson , Gl over , Breker a nd H ann ah . Wh ile Lechi en was busy running a way from everybody , Barnett a nd H annah were bu sy m oving th eir wa y up to the front. By th e second lap , Barnett had seco nd, whil e H annah was back in eigh th, H annah kept o n the ga s u ntil he wa s in sixth and was ho und ing j o hn son. With five lap s to go. it was Lechien , Barn ett . G lover , O ' Mar a , j o h nson an d H a n na h lead in g th e way . A lap lat er , H an na h zap ped j ohnson a nd th en reeled in O 'M ar a. Soon a fter, O 'M ar a wa s H an nah 's next victim, On th e last lap , th e top four were Lechi en , Barnett, G lover a nd H an nah . but a ll eves were focuse d o n Barnett, who was just in ch es ahea d o f G lo ver. After Lech ien had a lrea dy crossed th e fin ish line. Ba rn ett an d Gl over h ead ed into th e final turn . Gl over went insid e, whi le Barn ell went wide: Barnett loo ked to have th e better drive co m ing o ut o f th e turn , b u t hi s Kaw asaki ca me to a su dde n halt wi th a th rown cha in. Barnett j u mped o ff hi s bike a nd sta rte d push in g it up a stee p hill , where th e ch ecke red flag waited on to p . As Barnell push ed , H annah a nd O 'M ara m ot or ed past. H e fin all y m ad e it to th e top a nd cla ime d fifth . Ward. Whi ting, Bu rn wort h a nd j ohnson fin ish ed behind Barnett. " T he first th ing 1 tho ugh t was to p ush it across the line," said Ba rn ett. " T ha t' s just the way it goes. It 's still a long seas o n. a nd a t least it wasn ' t a DNF. 1 felt real good; every tim e I'ride th e bike 1 get stronger a nd stro n ger - I' ve got the sp eed , th at 's fo r su re. A few more week s a nd I'll be winn ing," _ " I felt good go ing into tod ay's rou nd ," sai d Lech ien , "but wh en 1 hook ed that havbal e th at kn ocked m e d own , I hurt ' m y sh o u ld er. H eal ey quick ly moved into seco nd , but not before Frank had a lready d evel oped a si zea ble lead. Hea le y starte d to reel in Frank but a t a slow p ace. Mann eh had a terrible sta rt but starte d making u p grou nd in a h urry. With four laps to go, Frank still maintained a decent lead o ver H ea ley, who began feel in g Manneh cl osin g in . Then , Frank landed too short over a double jump a nd cras h ed. T h is ga ve th e lead to H ea ley wit h tw o la p s 10 go . On the fin a l la p , w hi le run n ing into lapped traffi c, H ea ley go t a lillie o u t o f sha pe in th e stu tte r bum p s. T his was a ll Mann eh needed 10 cr u ise by a nd tak e ove r th e lead, A h a lf lap lat er , Manneh cro ssed the chec ker ed flag fir st inches a hea d o f H ea ley.
