The Vet event had its usual huge number or classes. Vet Expert Steve Clark held the lead from the start till lap six, wh en Vet Intermediat e Bob Audet edged h im o u t for a lap. As Hughes pulled out a co m forta ble lead, Thomas, now in second, began to feel the heat from John Matias evich (T ustin Honda) and Davis. After a cou p le o f laps Mariasevich found a way by, brin ging Davis with him as th ey began to dice for seco nd. Hughes stayed o u t front to th e fin ish whi le Ma tia sevich held Davis to third ah ead of Todd Kobetsky who made a last lap pass o n T homas. Davis was first o vera ll, a nd T homas ended up second with hi s 2-5 score. Hughes, who had pl aced eighth in th e first mot o, was third. In th e P ro cla sses Kaw asaki 's T odd Campbell, who was fresh off a win in the I25cc Supercross at San Diego the night befo re, was unbeat abl e in both the 250cc a nd I25cc divisions. A cras h in th e first 125cc moto wa s wh at Stacey Cook needed to tak e th e win , but Campbell ca me back to dominat e th e second round. Campbell easily took the fir st 250cc moto al so , but J eff Sch u macher ga ve him a run for th e mo ney in the second ro u nd by holdi n~ him o ff for most of th e race until bemg pa ssed o n th e sevent h lap. Au berlen ca me home fifth behind Gonzales a nd Petrie, but still got th ird overall. In the Mini Beginner 13-and-Over cla ss John Peterson was the overall winner after taking both rnotos. Peterson diced with Mike Cox (Kaw) and Eric Nichols for over half of th e first moto before he fin ally overt ook Cox for the lead wh ich led to victory. Cox stayed in seco nd as Nicho ls dropped off the pace lat e in the moto to tak e third. In rnoto two Peterson took the lead just a fter the start a nd left Jason Cable (Ka w), William Tucker (H on) , Cox, and Nichols to fight over second. Ned Joy (Hon). Calhoun flogs Novices at Corona By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, JAN. 25 Pomona Valley Ka wa sak i 's Brian Calhoun topped the I25cc Novice class tonight at Corona Raceway with 3-1 finishes. Although Calhoun hung back at third in the fir st rnoto, he came back and sna tched the lead near th e start of th e seco nd and was never cha llenged. Bill Auberlen (T &:O Yam aha ) grabbed the holeshot at the start of th e first moto and quickly opened a sma ll lead over Bryan Petrie (MC Country/ Kaw ) a nd Suzuki mounted Jerry Jetton. After two laps Auberlen 's lead had shrunk as Petrie moved in , whil e Calho un battled with J ett on over third. A little ove r halfway into th e race Petrie ran into a fallen beginner rider as he chased Auberlen o nto th e infield. The im pact shot Petrie over th e bars and several feet from his bike , but he was unhurt and remou nt ed af ter losin g several positions. T his left Au berlen with some room to breathe, and he went on 10 take an easy win. Jetton was able 10 shake off Calhoun for a comfortable second, and Petrie made his way back to fourth at the end of the rnoto.
