Chris Chambers was lead in g until R ice, Ca liforn ia , abo ut 24 miles from the start, when he crashed hard, split ting th e gas tank. jeff Chambers took over in th ir d after maki ng repairs, bu t got a flat tire, and finished the Ca lifornia round on the rim, in fourth p lace. Wel k's H on da passed H o well o n the fi rst Arizona loop , and held a two-minute advantage at the beg inning of the seco n d lap . Pfeiffers were third , eight mi n utes behind Chase a t th e start o f th e last lap. Welk and McGowen kept a fast pace which put th em a head by 13 minu tes a t th e fin ish . Pfeiffers p assed Howell/ Ch a se, who had tro ubles, to fin ish secon d. The H owell /Cha se H usky crossed th e lin e five and a half minutes a fter Pfeiffers for third. Class 20 Sol o ride r Case seized hi s '85 Yama' ha YZI 25 on Friday, whil e p rerun n ing n ear Bo u se. H e managed to find an '83 pi ston and pu t th e mach ine back togeth er. The to p th ree rider s in th e class were just a bo u t tied a fter th e first check point - Ed Fol and (Ca g ), Case and St ephen Buckley/Bob joh n so n (Hon ) - a ll passed th rough less th an a m inu te a pa rt . Fo la nd took an '85 Cagiva to the race, but cou ld n't get it d ialed in pro p erl y, so elected to ride th e '84 model. T ucker rode th e Arizona side until, j ust o utside Bo use, a main bearing sp u n , forcing th em to drop o ut. At a bo u t th e same point, Bu ckl ey's H onda seized a p iston. They spent abou t a n hour tea ri ng the top end do wn , sa ndin g the p iston smooth, a nd reassem bli ng th e mot or. Case rode co nsistently to th e fin is h , a ltho ug h hi s hands were ge tti ng numb. H e borrowed a pair of gloves that were too big a t o ne of hi s EastWest M.C. pits, a nd fin ish ed the ra ce. Kryger began h aving trou bles o n th e first Ari zona loo p an d fell off th e pace, a llowing Lapriak/Harris an easy victory. Kryge r was over a n hour back a t the fin ish of th e race. Class 38 Erl and Saltzman charged ha rd from the sta rt of th e C lass 38 ra ce, but were chased th e whole di stance by Dan Ash craft's fat he r, Bob Ashcraft , who was teamed wi th Dick Varner. Erl and Saltzman took the win by six mi nutes on th eir four-stroke Husky, whil PaulFreundand Rp ber t Hanna fin ished th ird, 34 m inutes beh ind th e • H usky of Ashcraft a nd Va rner.
