Ron Turner has won more motocross races in California than anyone: 342 . His most awesome season came in 1982 when he virtually owned Ascot Park, the oldest night motocross track in America .That summer, he won 73 percent of the motos he entered , and 76 percent of the overalls! Robertson cleans up at VOTE trials VALENCIA, CA, J AN . 13 John Robertson topped the Expert class a t th e third annual VOTE Ige Cup Trial he ld at In dian Du nes Cycle Park. David Webster was runner-up in the division , with Matt Pritch ard carding enough points to fin ish only third. Sixty riders were faced with 32-40 secti ons (depe n di n g on th eir class ). Four loops o f 10 secti ons each wer e on th e agenda. Rid ers took on sect io ns cons istin g of soft sand, rock y uphill cl imbs, mud a nd logs. All had light turns thrown in 10 keep th ings inte resting. Section two was th e o ne tha t gave riders th e most 10 think about before riding. Expert an d Amateur riders entered th e sec tion on a log laying lengthwise acr oss a three an d one-half foot drop. After ridin g up th e log, rid ers had 10 make a sha rp right turn then a left through narrow trees with ISO-degree turn that took them across a narrow ledge lo th e exit. Section seven caused everyone some con cern. It was a 30-ya rd trip through a water-filled mudhole. A pair of 45degree turns wer e thrown in for the Expert and Amateur classes just to keep them on their toes. The Begin ner a nd Novice classes took on jUS\ about everything in the .wa y o f obstacles that the Am at eurs - and Experts did, but on an easier scale. The only sections they did not ride were four and five, a double section that was a co nsta nt up hill climb in a ro ck- a nd tree-roos-Iil led gully that took it s share o f points away from th e riders. Begi n ners Mik e St. J ohn and Neil MacDonald battled to a 1-2 finish th at ga ve St. J ohn th e win by only one point. Am at eur rider Derr eck Bernard, a fter a two -year a bsence, rod e to a second-place fini sh , only three points behind class winner Bru ce Davis. The Sen ior Beginner cla ss a lso saw a close batt le. Ni ck Nichol son , a name tha t ha s not been seen in the results for quite som e time, took second pl ace behind Lawrenc e Alexander by on ly o ne point. It was a lmost th e first wind out in th e h istory of Corona but th e winds ease d up eno ug h for th e competitors to get through the program with a minimum of discom fort. The so rtin g out process was still much in evidence when they moved lo the ha lf m ile a nd Cannon and T hompson were joined by Danny P er kins, Ken King and Kevin Todd. D ur in g the heat, Ca nnon led the way off the line with Perkins in second a nd Thompson th ird. On the seco nd lap, going into turn three, Perkins went in too hot and lost it , leavi ng th e way clear for Thompson to move
