Ra m irez took th e lead from T raver o n lap two. a nd Mayer d ropped h im to third o n th e next lap. Ma ver tra iled Ra m irez for IWO laps before slipping into the lead . a nd Alvarado d ro p pe d T rav er back to fo un h . At th e halfwa y po int, Ma yer began pulling a way . whil e Ra m irez fought o ff Alvarado for second. Alvarado kep t th e pressure up for several laps unt il Ra m irez fell in a tight turn . Ma yer kept up his fast pace and fi nished th e race with a huge lead a nd was the onlv Intermed ia te tha t th e P ros didn 't lap: Bo nacci was second. a nd Alvarado th ird an d fir st 250 a head o f Traver. The 500cc p on ion wa s a lso led by Green. riding in a ma zing sty le. but G reen surprisingl y sta lled . wh ich put Zirbel into th e lead to th e Ilag o ver Rookie Ex pe rt Mike Oglesbee (Han ). On th e restart il was Word puttin g hi s outdated Pa ul s Sports Center Yamaha into the lead with Green in seco n d but agai n it was th e red flag syn d rome a nd a restart was in o rde r. On th e fin al tak e. Word pulled a n in cr edibl e h ol esh ot, while Fisher rode seco n d and Green " 'as stu ck mid-pa ck . Green worked through tr affic to m ove to secon d ear ly in the m ain a n d battled with Word for five laps. until grabbing th e lead and motoring awa y with th e race in fine st yle. H e took it a ll th e way to the checkers 10 beat Word. Sullivan and a h oarde o f Expert s co nsis ting of Del Sc h ni tzer ( Ha n). Trav is Babco ck (Han ), Adams a nd Fish er.
