Griewe nai's Pro win at DeAnza MX By Nate Rauba SUNNYMEAD, CA, JAN. 6 Don Griewe may have been racing with a sore back today, but it d idn't stop him from winning the 250cc Pro class at 26 DeAnza Racin g Club's Sunday MX. Criewe considered sitting out the seco nd round after winning the first moto but appeared at the gate and made his effort pay o ff. Eddie Michetti (Cycle News/Suzuki Country ) led the start of the first moto with Criewe (O 'Neal/Kaw), Matt Tedder (Moto-X Fox/Hon), and Reynard Rice in tow. After following Michetti for four laps, Criewe mad e his move and took the lead, while Rice moved into third and Colin Ryan (Yamah a of Redlands/Mote- \ man/ An swer) put Tedder back to fifth. Mich etti began a d escent through the pa ck on the foll owing lap a nd eventua lly dropped o u t o f th e race with m echanical problems. Criewe moved out to a bou t a fivesecond lead o ver Ri ce. wh o was being cha lle nged by Ryan , while T edd er held down fourth. From this point o n , the positions were set, with Ryan making a last-lap cha rge th a t ca me too late to mak e up the distance a nd overco me Rice, after he h ad pulled away from Ryan in th e last half o f th e moto. The sta rt of moto two found Miche tti, Criewe and Rya n cha sing a fter Suzuki Country's Rusty Hannah. Michetti was the first to cha llen ge Hannah and took the lead on lap two , then Criewe put the pressure to th e Suzuki pilot and dropped him to third on the fifth lap. Criewe was on the move and caught Michetti two laps la ter then opened a small lead which he kept throughout the last half of th e rnoto. Michetti held on 10 finish second, and Hannah spent th e last five laps battling with Rya n over third. Ryan co u ldn ' t get by, but hi s 3-4 finishes were good for second overa ll ahead of Tedder, who went 4-5 for the day. Sunwest Yamaha 's Mike Brooks had no problems taking th e Mini Intermediate class today. In the first moto Brooks quickly established a large lead, and it wasn't until half wa y into th e race that Adam Fitzgerald (Su nwest/Gear)could catch up. Fitzgerald only stayed clos e for a lap before slowing drastically, allowing Brooks to take an easy win. Brooks had a n even easier time winni ng the second moto since Fi tzgera ld sat the race out. Bobby McDaniel, aboard a Yamaha, took th e holeshot in the first rnot o ahead of Baker (Ge ne ra l Plumbing ), Doug Miller ( H o n) and Suzuk i Country's Brian Webb. McDaniel. with Baker in his tra cks, quickly began to pull away from th e rest of th e pack. After th e first lap, Baker dropped back a bit but wa s back on McDaniel's rear fender at mid moto. Baker tr ied to squeeze to the inside o f a tight corner, but McDaniel brake tested him and almost sent him into th e dirt. Baker came back to hound McDaniel for the next couple of laps before McDaniel went down with just over a lap remaining. The rest of the moto was all Baker's, while a ways back Miller held back the charges of Web b for the whole race to take seco nd. McDaniel cou ld only man age sixth after h is fall. In the second moto . Miller grabbed the holeshot ahead of Webb and McDaniel, while Ba ker was nea rly la st o ff the line. McDaniel sta lled in the second turn, and Ba ker swooped around everyone else to take over third. After following Webb on the first lap, Ba ker struck and moved into secon d on the next go-'round and quickly put th e pressure on Mill er. The Honda pilot held off Baker 's challenges unti l th e end of the third lap wh en Miller went off th e course at th e fin ish line. From th en on , Baker stre tched hi s lead to eas ily win a n d tak e th e overall. Miller held second for th e rest o f the moto, finishing just ahead o f Webb to nab second overall. J eff Ruu (Yam) was unbeat abl e in th e 250cc Novice class. Ater stalli n g on th e fir st lap of the first rnoto, R utt quickl y go t going aga in and was in the lead to stay before the lap was com plete. Th e sta rt o f moto two looked to have a battle in th e wings as R u tt grabbed th e lead j us t ahead o f Jim Kuntz (Su zuki Country ), who had made a quick cha nge to th ird in ' th e first rnoto.
