Brundage. Feeling the pressure, Brundage went down and Haug slipped by taking over the lead. By the end of the race, Haug had built upa comfortable five minute lead that took him to the checkered flag and taking home the number one plate. Results OPEN PRO: 1. PHOENIX, AZ, DEC. 9 Two main races headlined the excitement today as riders came from around the state to join in the afternoon festivities. The 250cc class main found eight riders meeting at the line for what would be 12 rough 'n' ready laps. Darin Balderston grabbed the holeshot, with Byron Hopkins and Rick Williams close behind. Balderston stretched it out, and Hopkins gained some breathing room. As Nic Schmidt, Darwin Hopkins and Wil· Iiams vied for third, a rider smacked the fence in the back straight, initiating a re tart. Schmidt stole the holeshot, with Byron Hopkins and Kent Gilbertso in hot pursuit. Schmidt pulled away from the pack, as Balderston worked' his way back up to pressure Byron Hopkins and Gilbertson. Balderston took second, as Byron Hopkins and Gilbertson fought each other and the pursuing Darwin Hopkins. Schmidt took the checkered, with Balderston in second and Gilbertson in third. In the Open class main, ShaUll Larkin took the holeshot, with Balderston stealing the title in turn three. Kevin Todd hung close behind, also overtaking Larkin's lead. As Balderston moved out in front, it was up to Todd and Larkin to give the folks a show. As they battled back and fourth. Balderston continued to stretch out his lead. Finally, Todd shook loose of Larkin's grip 'and decided on bigger things - first place. Gradually, he took some of the length out of Balderston's lead. With a little over one lap left, Todd snuck by Balderston and saw the white flag in the number one spot. Then, back in turns one and two, Balderston got the lead back. In turn three, with a burst of acceleration, Todd again moved in, only to find the track a tougher match. Balderston took thewin, with Larkin in second and Todd in third. Results 250 MAIN: 1. Lambert lands Hepler MX win By Brad and Sharon Jones HEPLER, KA, DEC. 9 Circle W Recreation closed out the '84 season with spring-like temperatures, perfect traction and a lot of riders testing out new machinery. Jack Lambert used a pairof '85 Yamahas to win all fourof the I25cc and 250cc Expert motos. In ~he first 125cc moto, Lambert took the holeshot, while Stee Forkner tried to make a pass on the pond bank. Forkner fell, giving Kenny Thexton and Kirk Patterson, who was riding a bOrrowed bike. a chance to battle for second. Thexton fell a few turn later putting Patterson in second. Brad Jones, 011 an '85 Honda CR500, started second rowan the gate and moved past Patterson on lap two. Meanwhile, Forkner recovered and reeled in Jones but was short at the £Ia,•. Lambert cruised in for the SWAN MX RACEWAY TYLER, TEXAS '$10,000 WIn. In ..he second mota, Lambert was out front again, with Forkner second. Jones moved up to battle Forkner getting by on the third lap. Lambert stayed about five seconds ahead for the win. In the 250cc Experts, Brad Jones got the holeshot, but Lambert blasted by on lap three for good., Kenny Thexton rode an excellent race in third. In moto two, it was Lambert getting the holeshot, while Thexton and Jones raced cjown the front straight for second. Lambert put three seconds on Jones on the first lap and stayed there for the rest of the race. Thex ton pushed Jones all the way to the finish. Doug Gray, who has recently moved up to a 125, took the Beginner class with ease. Gray grabbed the holeshot and left the pack in both motos. Charlie Bolinger moved up through the pack both motos to finish second overall. Trell Keen ran second the entire (jrst mota but hada problem in round two, leaving him with third overall. Steve Forkner outclassed his opponents in the 250cc Intermediate class, winning both motos with a quarter lap lead at the finish. Paul Merrifield., aboard a new '85 Yamaha, ran second the entire race, while Richie Blackmore and Greg Garrion battled for third. Garrison won out. In moto two, Forkner was again out front, while Blackmore and Garrison battled for second. Blackmore fell on the fourth lap, while Merri,Geld moved past Garrison. The former Yamaha pilot overcame two third place starts to take top honors. Greg Brown piloted his M-Star to the first mota holeshot over Chan Baker, Daft and Mike Hammer. Baker kept his CR500R pegged down the back straight and dove under Brown in a high speed sweeper. Daft got by Brown on the second lap then reeled in Baker.
