SWAN MX RACEWAY TYLER, TEXAS $10,000 Silverthorn, Harden, strike at D-38 hare scrambles By Diane Bell SUPERSTITIONMT.-,CA, OV.II Husqvarna's SCQt Harden scored a runaway victory in·the 125cc/Open race at the AMA District 38 250cc 7class short course hare scrambles. Lemon Grove Suzuki, Yamaha, KTM owner, Bill Silverthorn did likewise in the Senior/ Vet race. Both riders had near flawless rides and went vinually uncontested from lap one. The five-mile course was layed out in some of the roughest and siltiest mudhills in Imperial Valley. As 11:00 a.m. struck, the 125cc/ Open race was off and running. As expected, pre-race favorite Harden led the pack up pit row after the first lap. Hot on his heels was Yamaha rider Tom Moen and Austin Haydis on his 250cc Husky. Painted Gorge Motorcycle Club's Steve Basin on his new '85 Yamaha followed. The first 125cc rider, in eighth overall was Amateur Joey Lane with John Bird in tow. Novice 250cc rider, Gary Kepple followed at 11th overall. Moen led the second loop after Harden took a brief off course excur- . sion, "I made a Novice mistake. I went straight, after the pi ts and missed the turn." Haydis maintained a now distant third overall". Basin was closing the gap from founh. Bird passed Lane and ran fifth overall, first 125cc with Lane at sixth overall. Kawasaki West rider Bob Bell was trying to make up ground after a miserable stan, at eighth overall. Expen Steve Walker (25Occ) in 10th overall was also working his way up after meeting the ditch 'It check one on the first lap. Harden, who had regained his lead on the third lap, had built his advantage to 20 seconds after lap five. Moen continued in second overall. Haydis, who dropped back after losing his own contest with the silty track, left a battle between Bird and Basin for third overall, with Bird edging Basin out this loop. Bell had moved into fifth overall, second 125cc Expen with Joey Lane falling back bULmainlaining third 125cc. At the finish, Harden took the checkered nag with a comfortable lead over second-place Tom Moen. Basin finished third overall, third Open. In founh overall was 125cc winner Bird, with a closing Bell finishing 15 seconds back. Lane, in seventh overall, took third 125cc and was the first Amateur across the finish line. In eighth overall was Amateur Robbie Pippin, the first 250cc across the finish line. Results VETS. SR. llt BEG. SR EX: 1. Bill Silverthorn; 2. Roger Adsit; 3. Paul Ziegler. VET EX: 1.
