PHOENIX, AZ, DEC. 2
Of the 28 team ilia ten tered the
Phoenix Road Racing Organization' .annual two-hour endurance race, juSt a lillIe over
half survived the competition and the
tough course at Firebird International
Raceway. After the traditional dead
engine tan, the team of Mike Mangham and Bob Burkler hot lapped for
the early Lead on a 750cc Honda
Inter eptor, followed by a 500cc Interceptor belonging to the team of Benny
DeBaca, Joe Shelton and Craig Martin. Two crashes red-flagged the race
on lap II, and the restart turned into
a sprint between the Mangham/Burkler team and the Todd Griswold!
Kevin Ellioll team on a Kawasaki
750 Turbo. Griswold finally took
over on about lap 20, but Elliott
never got his chance to race, because
their Turbo tangled with another bike
and went down at mid-race. That left
the team of Mike Williams and Ed
Wright in second but wav behind on
a 750cc Suzuki. Hard riding by Williams - who looked like he was going
to crash every timecomingoutof turn
12 - and a pit stop or two by
Mangham/Burkler put the Suzuki in
the lead to earn the FI win.
Also finishing the full 69 laps were
the team of Greg Wing and Richard
Kahn on a 900cc Kawasaki inja for
second place in FI; Henry Tecza and
Jim Cox on a Yamaha FJ600 from
Nevada Yamaha for Ihe F2 win; and
Benny DeBaca, Joe Shelton and Craig
Martin on their SOOcc Interceptor for
the second spot in F2. Third place
finishers were Mangham and Burkler
in FI and the SCOll Willock/Chuck
Crawford tearn riding an RZ350 in F2.
Hicks handles
SHRGP

BRENTWOOD, CA, DEC. 2
Todd Hicks grabbed the early
lead in Sand Hill Ranch's
annual Grand Prix race, which
was very foggy this year. Hicks
held the lead for all 13 laps and
Jimmy Clay (Yam) gave Hicks the
only competition during the 45minute-long race.
Daren Gallagher, Terry Robens
and Jeff Langdorfled the 125 Junior/
Novice race, but no one could see the
start; fog was at ground level as spectators waited at the corebooth bend
to see who was in the lead. Gallagher
and Roberts were the first two to
break out of the rag, but Danny Paladino worked past Roberts for the
second. Roberts then spun around on
the slick mud, giving Paladino a little more ground. Paladino moved
closer to Gallagher, but never got by.
Rain began to replace the fog as the
250cc Junior/Pros took ofL Steve
Nauman (Han) holes hot a full gate
or riders followed by Rich My then,
Jim Anderson and Kimo Casey (Hon).
Anderson made a spperb move on
Nauman and My then taking the inside line around Chicken Coop corner
as Casey closed in. Anderson then did
a doughnut on top of Horsepower
Hill, dropping to third. Nauman
inherited the lead a Casey began getting squirrely on the downhill when
his rear uspen ion went out. My then
became the third leader and began to
stretch his lead. Ander on lOok
auman again on Chicken Coop
corner for second place and then put
the pressure on My then for the next
20 minutes as the clouds burst and
dumped buckets of rain on the track.
Anderson passed My then on the last
lap and Nauman took a spill on a
slick uphill.

Team Honda's Erik Kehoe put
in four faSt, consistent rides
today to take top honors in the
125cc and 250cc Pm classes.
The clear, brisk fall weather brought
out a star-studded field to compete on
the well-prepared Shadow Glen supercross track.
A.J. Whiting took the lead at the
stan of the first 250cc Pro moto.
Kehoe - riding his Kenn Bollesponsored Honda - got off to a slow
stan. He rapidly picked up the pace
and began picking aU riders as he
moved through the pack. By the
halfway point, Kehoe had passed Jeff
Hick, Russ Wageman, Willie Surrall and was pUlling heavy pressure
on Ed Arnet. Kehoe slid under Arnet
to take secondjust as Whiting landed
short over the triple jumps. Kehoe
then shot into a commanding lead
and was not cha Ilenged for the rest of
the moto. At the fini h it was Kehoe
in first with Arnet and Surrall coming in second and third.
Kehoe came flying off the line in
the econd 250cc Pro moto and held a
olid lead throughout the race. There
was a fierce battle for positions among
Hick, Arnet, Whiting, Mike Beier,
Rus Wageman and Surratt. Arnet
and Whiting bauled lap after lap for
second place, whileSurralland Wageman worked their way past Hicks
and Beier. When the results were tallied, the overall win went to Kehoe,
second to Arnet, and third to Surratt.
In the first 125cc Pro malO, Kawasaki pilot Billy Frank took the lead
early; Kehoe got tangled up in the pack
and went down in the first turn. He
qui kly remounted and began a furious charge from last place. Frank
took . the moto win, and the hard
'charging Kehoe worked his way
through the entire field to finish in
second place ahead of Ray Somma.
In the second moto, Frank cleared
the gate first, with Sommo and
Kehoe in close pursuit. Frank
pulled ahead of the rest of the riders
in the early laps as Kehoe had trouble
gening around Sommo's Kawasaki.
Several laps later, Kehoe managed
the pass and started reeling in Frank.
By the midway point, Kehoe had
passed Frank and took an easy overall
win with Frank and Sommo rounding out the top three.
