TEN YEARS AGO l-< Pierre Karsmakers (Yam), back from three weeks off the Trans-AMA series, won the final 'round at Saddleback Park. He finished just ahead of Roger DeCoster (Suz), who won the series overall the·week previous. Q.) ..c S Q.) u Q.) Q A.C. Bakken (Hus) won the San Gabriel Valley M.C.'s Barstow-toVegas Hare and Hound, second was Mitch Mayes (Hus). Art Knapp (Hus) was an early leader, ahead of Jack Johnson (Hus) and Bakken. Johnson then briefly took the lead until he holed a piston, giving the lead to Bakken. Fourth overall was Scot Harden (Hus); eighth overall was AI Baker (Hus). Over 3.000 riders entered the event. This was to be the last B·to· V race until 1983.· Shoulder pad and chest protector czar Jim Davis showed off his latest product- the Jim Davis Motosport noseguard. It was designed to fend off the advances of the much-feared Spanish fly, an insect reputed to cause great bodily injury if the rider is not properly shielded against it. Despite all of these claims and more, the JDMN looks suspiciously like a badminton birdie. It was announced that Camel cigarettes wpuld be sponsoring the entire 1975 AMA National series, "Many thousands of tobaccobucks" su ppl ied by the new sponsor were going to be a major incentive for riders. Two rotary engine-powered vehicles were tested in Cycle News: One was Mazda's RX-4 pickup. the other was the Hercules 2000. The Mazda got about 16.5 mpg and was described, in part, as a high-performance sport truck. The Hercules had its rotary powerplant slung under two frame tubes and looked "futuristic." It was noted that while running, the exhaust pipes on the Hercules always glowed red hot. The results page reported that Richee Collins (Pen) was the winner of the 100cc Experts, with JeU Ward (Hon) second at Orange County'International Raceway. Winner of the 125cc Powder Puffs was Gale Webb (Hon), and Broc Glover took the I25cc Intermediates on a Honda. At Corona, Mike Minnig (Yam) beat Eddie Lawson (Yam) in the l25cc Expert short track. In the 250cc Expert ST first division, Mike Tidwell (Yam) was the winner while Lawson took third on a Cooper. Lawson prevailed, however, winning the l25cc Experts in the half mile, with Minnig second and Gordy Kidd (Yamnhird. There was more Lawson/Tidwell action at 395 Cycle Park. Tidwell won the 125cc Amateur/Expert TT over Lawson; Eddie took second in the 250cc Amateur/Expert TT, also. Tidwell won the Sweepstakes, while Lawson finished third.
