ing's sun was replaced by gathering clouds, as Phillips shot into the lead (rom the pole position - a lead he and teammate Vreeke were to hold for nearly every lap of the race. They were pursued by a numbe-r of other Open class entries including Shannon Criss on the Shannon Racing· Honda and Charles Below on the Team Swat Honda. By the second lap, .smaller displacement bikes were moving up into the top J O. Scon Grey on the Safety BuHalo Racing F]600 led the invasion charging from the 10th row to second place in less than two laps. Following his example were one of Yarrow Racing's riders on their 500cc thumper and Team Platinum on an RD. The Team Lockhart and Safety BuHalo relief riders proved themselves capable of keeping up the pace. The riders from the first leg had . lapped the third-place Shannon Racing bike, and the fresh riders kept their pOsitions. At the one hour mark, the top three were followed by the ]ohnson/Riddle/Hughesentry, Yarrow Racing and the Hewell/Ruffner Team Quaalude RD. Two hours into the race the threatening clouds finally let loose with rain, and 12 of the 60 bikes still running crashed in a ingIe lap. Most were simple low side, slow speed crashes where the rider got up and rode away, but the first of four bikes to crash in turn three split its cases and dumped oil along the riders' line. The race was red-flagged. After an hour the rain had stopped, and the track quickly dried out. But turn three was still too slick [or the cleanup crew to stand on. After another half hour the track was clear and the race restarted for another hour. Shannon Criss was back aboard the Shannon racing entry and wheelied into the lead at the restart. But the Team Lockhart and Safety Buffalo bikes were, in realitv.. two laps ahead. The rest of the' riders could only guess at their overall position since·theSCCA.scoring computer had quit an hour-into the race. The two leaders continued to dice for the rest of the race. Criss, Ed Ragle - aboaid the Red Eagle Racing Yamaha - and the Team Quaalude RD ran with the leaders in their-own battle for third place. The Safety Buf- . falo bike moved into the lead in the last minutes of the race when the Team Lockhart bike was slowed in traffic, but Team Lockhart regained the lead 50 minutes into the second leg, just in time to get the red flag when the rain began a second time. The final order was Team Lockhart, Safety Buffalo Racing, Shannon Racing, Team Quaalude, and Red Eagle Racing. To top things off, every class winner received free exhaust pipes donated by SuperTrapp. - Results OVERALL 1. Team Lockhart: W. Phillips. J. Vreeke (Kaw); 2. Safety Buffalo Racing: S. Grey, T. A tough place to prove any new motorcycle design. BUlthe new ATK 560 4-Stroke emerged victorious finishing 1st and 3rd overall. ahead of all the 2stroke motocross bikes, and ahead of the factory 4-stroke bikes from Honda and Husky. Quite an accomplishment by two privateer riders on stock production bikes. We think the ATK 560 is the only 4stroke di.rt bike in the world that is com- petitive against Open class 2-Stroke motocross bikes. thanks to the ATK's light 248 lb. weight and superior suspension. Compared to other 4-strokes that begin as play bikes, there is no comparison. All ATKs feature Cycle-Am fenders, reliable and powerful Rotax motors, White Power single shock suspension, and Cal-Fab aluminum swing~Jrms w/A-Trak Chain Torque Eliminators.
